Gylfi Þór Sigurðsson (born September 8, 1989 in Reykjavík ) is an Icelandic football player .
Club career
Career start in England
Gylfi Sigurðsson was accepted into the youth academy of the English club Reading FC in 2005, having previously played in Iceland for FH Hafnarfjörður and Breiðablik Kópavogur . In 2007 he received his first professional contract and was promoted to the professional squad a year later. He made his competitive debut for Reading in August 2008 against Luton Town in the League Cup and was awarded to the fourth division club Shrewsbury Town for a month after another League Cup appearance in October 2008 . He made six appearances for Shrewsbury, in five of which he was on the starting line-up and scored a goal on his debut in a 4-1 win over Bournemouth. An extension of the loan period was refused by Reading and Gylfi Sigurðsson returned to his regular club in mid-November, for which he also made his FA Cup debut in January 2009 . In February 2009 he was initially loaned to third division club Crewe Alexandra for a month , but the loan period was finally extended until the end of the season. At Crewe, he established himself with impressive performances in the starting line-up and scored three goals in 15 appearances, which did not save the club from relegation to fourth division.
Already in the following season 2009/10 Gylfi Sigurðsson rose to the outstanding player of the second division FC Reading. He established himself in the team immediately after his league debut at the end of August 2009 and mostly acted behind the top. During the season he scored a total of 22 goals, 16 of them in the Football League Championship . In addition, he was responsible as the club's free kick and penalty taker and often took over the execution of the corners. In the 2009/10 FA Cup , he first met in the third round win against Liverpool at Anfield Road in stoppage time to equalize before the second division won the extra time. Then Gylfi Sigurðsson scored in the fourth round against first division club Burnley the goal to win 1-0 and also scored in the extension of the five-round replay with a long shot against West Bromwich Albion to 3-2 final result. Only in the quarter-finals did Reading fail after a 2-0 lead with 2: 4 to Aston Villa . In March 2010, Gylfi Sigurðsson scored five goals in six games and was then named “Player of the Month” in the Football League Championship, and at the end of the season, the fans of Reading FC voted him “Player of the Season”. At the start of the 2010/11 season, Gylfi Sigurðsson confirmed his form from the previous season and scored two goals in the first four match days.
Change to Hoffenheim
Shortly before the end of the transfer deadline, Gylfi Sigurðsson moved to the German Bundesliga club TSG 1899 Hoffenheim on August 31, 2010 . According to Reading FC, the transfer represents a new record transfer revenue in the club's history, exceeding £ 6.5 million that the club received in 2009 for Kevin Doyle . Hoffenheim's manager Ernst Tanner called the amount "a little exaggerated" and spoke of six million euros as a transfer fee. At Hoffenheim he signed a contract until the summer of 2014. On his second appearance on matchday four, he scored the goal with a direct free kick to make it 2-2 against 1. FC Kaiserslautern immediately after being substituted on . At that point he was only on the field for 28 seconds. Gylfi Sigurðsson was substituted on on the seventh matchday against 1. FSV Mainz 05 and scored four minutes later with a free kick. On matchday 10 he was in the starting line-up for Hoffenheim for the first time and scored the first two goals in the 4-0 home win against Hannover 96 .
Change to the Premier League
On January 2, 2012, he was loaned to the Premier League club Swansea City , as he should collect more match practice after his injury in the summer and the missed preparation. In England he was voted Premier League Player of the Month for March 2012 . After good performances throughout the second half of the season, the club decided to sign Gylfi Sigurðsson firmly. On May 28, 2012, Swansea City announced that an agreement had been reached with Hoffenheim and Gylfi Sigurðsson for a final transfer. With a transfer fee of £ 6.8 million (around € 8.5 million) mentioned by Swansea, this would have been the most expensive transfer in the club's history. However, the agreement was denied by TSG. As a result, Gylfi Sigurðsson from Hoffenheim received an extended vacation until June 30th to fix his transfer to the Premiere League. Finally, Gylfi Sigurðsson did not move to Swansea for the 2012/13 season , but to Tottenham Hotspur . The parties have agreed not to disclose the terms of the transfer with Hoffenheim.
He returned to Swansea City in July 2014 . He signed a contract that ran until summer 2018.
On August 16, 2017, he joined Everton FC .
National team
Gylfi Sigurðsson has been a regular member of Icelandic junior selection teams since 2005. With the U19 he reached the second round of the European Championship qualification in 2008, in which one missed the final round participation as group runners-up behind Bulgaria. In qualifying for the U-21 European Championship in 2011 , with two goals in the play-off second leg against Scotland in October 2010, he was instrumental in ensuring that the Icelandic U-21 team qualified for a U-21 European Championship final round for the first time.
He made his debut in the Icelandic senior team in May 2010 at the age of 20 in a 4-0 win in a friendly against Andorra .
At the European Football Championship in France in 2016 , he was accepted into Iceland's squad. Gylfi Sigurðsson was one of the regulars and played all five games in the tournament over the full season. In the second group game he gave his team a 1-0 lead against Hungary with a converted penalty. When Iceland played for the first time at a European Championship, the team made it to the quarter-finals.
He was also on the Icelandic squad for the 2018 World Cup in Russia, where Iceland was able to take part in a World Cup finals for the first time. After a draw with Argentina and defeats against Nigeria and Croatia, Iceland was eliminated as the last in Group D in the preliminary round; Gylfi Sigurðsson was on the field in all three games and scored the temporary equalizer in the 2-1 defeat against Croatia with a hand penalty.
