Séamus Coleman (born October 11, 1988 in Donegal ) is an Irish football player on the position of defender . He currently plays for the English first division club Everton .

Career

Career start in Killybegs

Coleman began his active football career in the small coastal town of Killybegs, not far from his native Donegal. At the beginning of his career mainly active in the youth team, he was also used in the men's team of the club until the end of his playing career there. Exactly in this he was discovered in 2006 during a friendly match against the Irish first division club Sligo Rovers FC by the responsible persons of the professional club and invited to a test training.

Switch to the Sligo Rovers

About three months after signing in July 2006, Coleman made his league debut on October 17, 2006 in a 4-0 defeat by Derry City when he came on for Australian Adam Hughes in the 75th minute . After he only made three league appearances at the new club in the first season, he became a regular regular player from 2007 and made a total of 26 league appearances and three appearances in the FAI Cup in the 2007 season . In 2008, the young defender was in the 26 championship games for the Sligo Rovers on the field and scored one goal. The goal, which was also his first goal as a professional footballer, he scored on May 17, 2008 in a 3-0 win over the Bray Wanderers . Other three missions he came in the League of Ireland Cup of 2008 where he, however, already resigned with the team in the second round, as well as three appearances in the FAI Cup in 2008 , where he the team even into the third with his participation Round led.

Transfer to Everton FC

Following recommendations from Willie McStay , a former team-mate of Everton coach David Moyes , Coleman was transferred to Everton for a surprisingly cheap transfer fee of just £ 60,000 . Other UK clubs have previously expressed interest in the dedicated Irish defender; including Ipswich Town , Birmingham City and Celtic Glasgow .

Immediately after his move to England Coleman was initially transferred to the Northern Division of the Premier Reserve League to the reserve team of Everton FC, where he was to gain further experience and, over time, also be used in the professional team. After his severe foot injury, which left him out for several months and almost marked the end of his career, he sat on the bench of Everton for the first time on October 17, 2009 in the game against Wolverhampton Wanderers . He finally made his competitive debut for the club's professionals on October 22, 2009 in an EL group match against Benfica Lisbon , when he was on the pitch for the full length of the game; the game ended in a 5-0 defeat for the English.

Shortly thereafter, he made his Premier League debut on October 25, when he came on for Johnny Heitinga in the 80th minute of the 3-2 away defeat by Bolton Wanderers . In his second league appearance on December 6, 2009 against Tottenham Hotspur , Coleman was voted "Man of the Match" after he replaced the injured captain Joseph Yobo from the 15th minute and delivered a good game and even provided an assist. After the team was 2-0 down for a long time, they were able to turn the game around and the game ended in a 2-2 draw.

In March 2010, the second division FC Blackpool Coleman on loan to replace the injured Neal Eardley , the loan period originally agreed for a month was extended in April to the end of the season. He made his debut immediately on March 20 in a 2-2 draw against Crystal Palace , when he was on the field for the entire game. In his second appearance on March 23, he gave three assists in a 5-1 home win over Swansea City and finally scored his first goal on loan on his fourth appearance in the Tangerines jersey , a 4-2 away win over Scunthorpe United . During his loan period at Blackpool FC, Coleman was used in nine league games over the full game, scoring one goal and giving five assists. At the end of the season, the team rose after successfully surviving play-offs - Coleman was in all three play-off games in action - in the Premier League.

On December 29, 2013 Coleman scored his 10th Premier League goal in the 100th Premier League game for Everton FC.

International

Coleman gained his first international experience in the Irish U-21 national team, with whom he has participated since 2008, among other things in the qualification for the U-21 European Championship 2009 (1 game) and the qualification for the U-21 European Championship 2011 (3 games). Ireland was unable to assert itself clearly in both qualifications and was eliminated from the 2009 European Championship qualifying as bottom of the group. In the qualification for the EM 2011, Coleman and his team are currently (end of February 2010) also in the last group place. He made his debut in the U-21 national team against Spain's U-21s when he played over 56 minutes and was then replaced by Graham Carey .

He has also been with the Irish U-23 national team, for which he was called up during his time with the Sligo Rovers, just like the U-21s, since 2008. In addition, the defender took part in the International Challenge Trophy and completed one game. On February 8, 2011, he made his first international A match at the Carling Nations Cup against Wales.

At the European Football Championship in France in 2016 , he was included in Ireland's squad. He was part of the team and played all four tournament games over the full season. In the opening game against Sweden he put the 1-0 through Wes Hoolahan . In the second round, the team failed because of the hosts.
