Thomas "Tom" Davies (born June 30, 1998 in Liverpool ) is an English football player who has been under contract with Everton FC since 2016 .

Club career

Everton FC

Tom Davies is the nephew of former soccer player Alan Whittle , who was active at Everton FC in the 1970s . At the age of eleven, Davies joined the Liverpool club himself , having previously played in the Tranmere Rovers youth teams . After graduating from the youth academy, he played regularly in the U21 Evertons and signed his first professional contract with the Toffees on September 30, 2015 . Davies' strong form in the Under-21s was also noticed by senior team coach Roberto Martínez , who rewarded him with his Premier League debut on April 16, 2016 . In the 1-1 draw against Southampton FC , he was brought into play in the 83rd minute for Darron Gibson . After Roberto Martínez was fired at the end of the 2015/16 season , the 17-year-old Davies made his first appearance in the starting line-up of Evertons under his successor David Unsworth . After his strong performance in the 3-0 win over Norwich City , he was voted Man of the Match after the game . These two missions were his only ones in the 2015/16 season.

In the following season 2016/17, Davies commuted between banking with the pros and U23 until the turn of the year. He made 5 short appearances in the Premier League by the end of 2016. After showing strong performances shortly before the end of the first half of the season after being substituted on, he was allowed to prove himself in the starting line-up for the first time of the season on January 2, 2017 against Southampton FC. He paid back this trust with an assist in the 3-0 win. His next game against Manchester City , he already scored his first goal in professional football when he was able to achieve the interim 3-0 in the 79th minute in the surprising 4-0 home win against the Citizens . Davies was named Man of the Match after the game. He was featured in 24 games that season, scoring two goals and preparing three more. Davies won three awards at Everton's awards ceremony. He was voted Everton's Player of the Season by fans this season, his goal against Manchester City as Goal of the Season and his performance in that game as Performance of the Season.

In the 2017/18 season, Davies increasingly suffered from the strong competition in the central midfield of his club. Everton launched a transfer offensive to return to international business with coach Ronald Koeman . In addition to Idrissa Gueye and James McCarthy , who had already played in the club, Everton also signed Gylfi Sigurðsson , Davy Klaassen and Nikola Vlašić for the positions in central midfield during the season . Nevertheless, despite the millions invested, the season got off to a bad start. Everton lost six of twelve games at the beginning of the season in which Davies was mainly substituted on. Coach Koeman was eventually sacked and Davies found his previous season's form under his successor Sam Allardyce . In February 2018, he was listed at number 7 on the list of Most Promising Football Players Under 20 by the CIES Football Observatory . This month Davies also made his 50th appearance for Everton.

On August 29, 2018, Davies was allowed to lead the Toffees onto the field as captain for the first time in the 3-1 cup win against Rotherham United . At 20 years and 60 days, he became the youngest player to ever wear the Everton armband.

National team

Davies played in all of England's youth teams, starting with the U16. He was the captain of England's U17s at the 2015 U-17 World Cup in Chile , where they failed in the group stage.
