Stekelenburg began his career at VV Schoten in Haarlem, where he first played in central defense as a child , before moving into goal in the C-youth . At the age of 15 he went to Ajax Amsterdam and was initially used in the youth, where he ousted the future goalkeeper of Cercle Brugge , Bram Verbist , out of the gate. With Ajax's second team, the 1.94 m tall goalkeeper made it to the semi-finals of the Dutch Cup in the 2001/02 season. In the squad of the first team he was for the first time on February 24, 2002 at the age of 19 in the 1-0 victory in Breda , but without being used. For the first time he was at the start of the 2002/2003 season in the Supercup win against PSV Eindhoven (3-1) on August 11, 2002 when the first two goalkeepers Joey Didulica and Bogdan Lobonț were injured. His first game in the Eredivisie was a week later in a 3-1 win against FC Utrecht .

Stekelenburg was a regular goalkeeper in the 2005/06 season , in which he came on 27 missions. He remained Ajax's number one until the 2008/09 season. However, a shoulder injury put him out of action at the end of September 2008, so that Kenneth Vermeer , goalkeeper of the U-23 national team , took him in from October until the winter break. Stekelenburg came back in goal in January but made some less than good games, so coach Marco van Basten preferred Vermeer again from late February; Stekelenburg only made twelve appearances in the Eredivisie during the season. With the coach change to Martin Jol , however, he had his regular place in the goal of Amsterdam again in the 2009/10 season , which he also kept with Frank de Boer . Internationally, Stekelenburg was in action for Ajax in the Champions League and in the UEFA Cup and in the Europa League . In mid-March 2011, Stekelenburg suffered a broken thumb in his right hand, which meant the premature end of the season for him. After numerous top European clubs had shown interest in Stekelenburg's commitment to the 2011/12 season, he signed a four-year contract with AS Roma in July 2011 . On September 17, 2011, Stekelenburg was injured in the head by a kick by Inter defender Lúcio and was unconscious for five minutes. A slight concussion was diagnosed during the subsequent examination at the hospital .

For the 2013/14 season , Stekelenburg moved to the Premier League for Fulham . With his team he was relegated at the end of the season. While Fulham played in the second division , Stekelenburg ran on loan for the French first division club AS Monaco in the 2014/15 season . For the Monegasque he was only used once in the league. In the 2015/16 season , Stekelenburg returned to the Premier League when he was loaned again from Fulham and joined Southampton FC .

On September 3, 2004 Stekelenburg made his debut in the Dutch national team. In a friendly against Liechtenstein (3-0) he was substituted on for goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar after the break. In addition to van der Sar and Henk Timmer , Stekelenburg was part of the Netherlands' squad at the 2006 World Cup in Germany and the 2008 European Championship in Austria and Switzerland. At the European Championship in 2008 he completed a match in the third group game against Romania and remained without a goal. In the "era van der Sar" he came to a total of twelve games.

After van der Sar's resignation in 2008, Stekelenburg was the new number one in Oranje under Bondscoach Bert van Marwijk , but was unable to play some games due to his shoulder injury, so that, as his substitute Henk Timmer was injured, van was also injured in the World Cup the Sar returned from retirement for two games. In addition, Stekelenburg had to suspend a game because he - as the first ever Dutch international goalkeeper - was sent off in the international match against Australia on September 6, 2008 after a foul on Joshua Kennedy of the field. For the 2010 World Cup , Stekelenburg was again in the Dutch squad. Stekelenburg was also a regular goalkeeper at the European Championships in 2012, but retired with his team in the preliminary round. After he lost his regular place in the club, he was no longer nominated for the 2014 World Cup.

After a break of almost exactly four years, Stekelenburg returned to the national team on October 7, 2016 as a club player for Everton ; he was in the World Cup qualifier against Belarus (4-1) and three days later against France in the goal of the national team.
