Career

In the club

Vermeer comes from the youth of Ajax Amsterdam . Up to and including the D-youth he played in various positions in the defense, only in the second year as a D-youth he switched - still at the amateur club Neerlandia SLTO - into goal, namely the C-youth team. As a youth, he was voted Ajax Talent of the Year at the end of the 2002/03 season. In 2005 he moved up as a substitute goalkeeper in the professional squad without initially being used in the honor division . In 2006, he made his competitive debut for the Ajax team when the team faced IK Start in the first round of the 2006/07 UEFA Cup . Without playing for Ajax in a league game, he was awarded to Willem II Tilburg in the summer of 2007 . After Maikel Aerts , the club's regular goalkeeper from the province of Noord-Brabant , injured himself at the start of the season, Vermeer made his first division debut. In the meantime ousted by the recovered competitor, he had to replace it again in spring 2008 due to an injury. After the loan ended, he became third goalkeeper at Ajax behind national goalkeepers Maarten Stekelenburg and Dennis Gentenaar . In the 2009/10 season he was used once and completed the 90 minutes in the 1-0 victory over champions AZ Alkmaar without conceding a goal . In the 2010/11 season, Vermeer was able to celebrate the championship with the club - despite being a reservist. After Stekelenburg left Ajax after this season, Vermeer became the new goalkeeper. With him as a regular goalkeeper, Amsterdam was able to defend the title.

In the national team

With the U21 Juniors of the Netherlands , he won the European Championship in 2006 . He was also part of the winning team at the 2007 European Championship . Following the season, Vermeer was appointed as a substitute in the squad for the 2008 Summer Olympics in the summer of 2008 . On November 14, 2012, Vermeer was in the senior national team's starting line-up for the first time in the match against the DFB-Elf in Amsterdam.
