Career

society

Toornstra played for the Dutch amateur club Alphense Boys in the "Tweede Class C". In his last season for this club he scored twenty goals. The first division club ADO Den Haag became aware of him through his impressive performance . At first, The Hague scouts did not believe that Toornstra could develop into a regular player in the professional team, so he was first signed for the reserve team.

The move to The Hague followed in summer 2009 ; he signed a contract until 2012. On February 12, 2010 he made his hoped-for professional debut against Willem II Tilburg . He quickly developed into a regular player and league rivals such as AZ Alkmaar , FC Twente Enschede and Roda JC Kerkrade also expressed interest in the young midfielder. But Toornstra still opted for ADO and extended his contract early on July 4th until 2014. For the 2010/11 season he got jersey number 7, which Karim Soltani wore a season earlier , who emigrated to Greece . On January 30, 2011, he scored his first league match goal in a long time, in a 5-1 win over Excelsior Rotterdam , before he missed a single league game. On May 26th, he scored a hat trick in the national "Europa League Playoffs" against FC Groningen . After The Hague won the first leg 5-1, they lost 1-5 in the second leg. In the end, The Hague secured the starting place with a 4-2 win on penalties.

During the winter break of the 2012/13 season Toornstra moved to league rivals FC Utrecht . There he played his first competitive game on February 3, 2013 against Twente Enschede . In this game, he immediately scored the first goal for his new club. Toornstra played a total of 12 league games in his first half series with Utrecht, in which he scored five goals.

National team

On May 13, 2010 he was appointed for the first time for the U-21 national team for the games against Portugal on May 18 and 21. He made his first international appearance in the first leg on May 18. He scored his first international goal on August 11 against Liechtenstein .

In 2013 he ran for the first time for the senior national team. He made his debut on June 7th in a friendly against Indonesia. Four days later he was allowed to play for his country a second time against China.
