Van der Heijden, mostly used on the left side of midfield, made his league debut for the professional team of the AFC Ajax in Amsterdam on November 4, 2007 against Roda JC . In the course of the season he only came on one more mission. In March 2008 the club extended with him until 2013. With coach Marco van Basten , however, he had little chance of further assignments. After Tilburg's relegation , he initially returned to Ajax before signing a two-year contract with Vitesse Arnhem in August 2011 . Arnhem coach John van den Brom had previously worked with van der Heijden in the youth of AFC Ajax. He later extended the contract for another two years before moving to Feyenoord Rotterdam in the summer of 2015 .

Van der Heijden was a national player in the Dutch U-20 team . Before that, he played for other Dutch youth teams and took part in the U17 World Cup in 2005 with the U17 . In 2009 the midfielder was appointed to the U-21 squad for the Toulon tournament. In the U-21 he was used twice.
