James McCarthy (born November 12, 1990 in Glasgow ) is an Irish-Scottish football player . McCarthy was born in Scotland and is eligible to play for Irish football selections.

Club career

Hamilton Academical

After graduating from St Margaret Mary's Secondary School in Glasgow, he made his professional debut on September 30, 2006 against Queen of the South . One day before his sixteenth birthday he was on the club's starting grid for the first time.

He became the club's regular player in the years to come. In May 2008 he signed a three-year contract with Hamilton Academical . At the end of the 2008/09 season he was awarded the SPFA Young Player of the Year Award.

Wigan Athletic

On July 16, 2009, Hamilton accepted an offer from the English Premier League club Wigan Athletic . McCarthy moved on July 21 for £ 1.2million. The transfer fee can rise to a total of £ 3 million, depending on success.

He played his first game in the Premier League on August 22 as a substitute in the game against Manchester United .

Everton FC

On September 2, 2013 McCarthy moved to Everton FC . McCarthy sustained a serious injury during a game against West Bromwich on January 20, 2018. He suffered a double broken leg. He did not play another assignment in the 2017/18 season for Everton after his injury. He played his last game for Everton on the last match day of the 2018/19 season before moving to Crystal Palace in August 2019 .

National team

James McCarthy is allowed to play for both the Irish and Scottish national teams. His ancestors come from County Donegal, Ireland . But he decided to play for Ireland early on. There has been a lot of criticism from Scottish fans and media because of this decision.

In January 2007 he completed his first international match for the Irish U-17 selection. Since then he has played in all of the country's youth selections.

In February 2010 he was appointed to the Irish national football team for the first time . In the friendly against Brazil on March 2, 2010, he was used for the first time. McCarthy played for the Irish from the 69th minute when he took on the field for Liam Lawrence .

At the European Football Championship in France in 2016 , he was included in Ireland's squad. He was on the starting line-up in all four tournament games until he was eliminated in the round of 16, and he was also substituted four times.
