Mamadou Sakho (born February 13, 1990 in Paris ) is a French football player who has been under contract with the English first division club Crystal Palace since 2017 .

Career

Early years

Sakho started playing football for his hometown club Paris FC at the age of six . In 2002 he moved to the youth department of Paris Saint-Germain . Sakho is originally a trained striker , but was turned into a defender at PSG due to a defensive player shortage.

He had some adjustment difficulties as his coaches weren't happy with his social behavior. He even threatened to be kicked out of the youth academy. It was only after many conversations with his parents and his then U-13 coach that Sakho began to concentrate completely on football. In April 2005 he made the leap into the regional youth team of the Île-de-France region , with which he won the Coupe Nationale in 2005/06 . In the same year he played in the U-18 youth team, although he was three years younger than most of his team-mates. With the U-18 he won the National Championships .

Sakho played in the so-called Camp des Loges for six years . On February 14, 2007, one day after his 17th birthday, he was used for the first time with the professionals. He played his very first professional game in the last 32 of the 2006/07 UEFA Cup against AEK Athens . The PSG won 2-0.

Promotion at PSG

On June 14, 2007, Sakho signed his first professional contract, which was dated for three years. At the age of seventeen he was part of the first team and was numbered three. He played his first game of the 2007/08 season on September 26, 2007 in the Coupe de la Ligue , when PSG beat FC Lorient 3-0 . He acted in central defense together with the experienced Colombian Mario Yepes . His league debut followed a month later, on October 20 in a 0-0 draw against Valenciennes FC . After captain Pauleta and his deputy Sylvain Armand were both absent from the starting grid, Sakho was given the armband at the age of seventeen and eight months and became the youngest ever captain at Paris Saint-Germain and in Ligue 1 at all. In the next game against Olympique Lyon , he was also the captain, where he faced the up-and-coming young talent Hatem Ben Arfa . Despite a good performance from Sakho, Ben Arfa scored two goals, securing Lyon a 3-2 win over PSG. In the following game against AS Nancy Sakho suffered a serious injury and was out for more than two months. On February 23, 2008 he made his comeback when he played through the full season in the 1-1 draw against AS Monaco . On March 29, he won with his team 2-1 against RC Lens and thus secured the Coupe de la Ligue 2008. This was his first title in professional football. At the end of the 2007/08 season he was able to book sixteen missions.

In the following season he completed 34 league games and reached 2nd place in the table with his team. The team also reached the semi-finals of the Coupe de la Ligue and Coupe de France and the quarter-finals of the 2008/09 UEFA Cup . On January 30, 2009, his contract was extended to 2012 due to his consistent, solid performance and several transfer requests from abroad. Two weeks later, one day after his 19th birthday, Sakho scored his first ever league goal when he took his team 1-0 up in a 2-1 win over AS Saint-Étienne .

He started the 2009/10 season with the two more experienced Sammy Traoré or Zoumana Camara in central defense. During the season, Sakho became embroiled in controversy: he allegedly physically assaulted a Le Parisien journalist at the PSG training center. Before the incident, Sakho had confronted the journalist with the accuracy of an article that blamed the nightclub visit before the game against FC Lorient for the poor performance and the resulting defeat. After the confrontation, he is said to have insulted him and then hit him before he fled. The journalist who wanted to remain anonymous, as well as the newspaper itself, described Sakho's actions as "unprofessional". PSG President Robin Leproux and coach Antoine Kombouaré apologized for this incident and Sakho also apologized to the journalist on the phone.

At the beginning of the 2010/11 season he had a permanent partner in defense with Zoumana Camara . Due to the loss of captain Claude Makélélé , he was available as captain during the 2010/11 UEFA Europa League season . In mid-August 2010 the veteran Sylvain Armand took Camara's place in central defense. On September 11th, he scored his first goal of the season in a 4-0 win over AC Arles-Avignon . In the Europa League he led his team to victory in the 5-4 victory after two games against Maccabi Tel Aviv and thus into the group stage. There you met the teams Borussia Dortmund , FC Sevilla and Karpaty Lviv . After three wins and three draws and the associated group victory, the PSG reached the round of 32. There they secured progress against BATE Baryssau after a 0-0 in Paris and 2-2 in Baryssau through the away goal rule .

Change to the Premier League

On September 2, 2013 Sakho moved to the Premier League for Liverpool on the last day of the transfer window . Mamadou Sakho scored his first goal for the Reds in a 4-1 win over West Ham United on Matchday 15.

In April 2016 it was announced that a doping test on March 17, 2016 was positive. This provided an indication of the unauthorized use of a fat burner . UEFA has placed a 30-day temporary ban on him pending a final decision. Sakho had decided not to open the B sample. On July 8, 2016, UEFA announced that it had discontinued the proceedings because the substance higenamine found was not on the prohibited list. However, higenamine belongs to the prohibited class S3 ( ephedrine ). The World Anti-Doping Agency nevertheless waived an objection to the decision because Sakho had already served a one-month ban.

Sakho has been under contract with Crystal Palace since August 2017 . In the second half of 2017 he already played on loan for the Londoners.

National team

Sakho for France 2013

Sakho played for all youth national teams in his home country. At the age of 13 he played in the regional youth team of the Île-de-France region together with players such as Yacine Brahimi ( Stade Rennes ), Tripy Makonda ( Paris Saint-Germain ) and Sébastien Corchia ( Le Mans FC ). He made his U-16 debut on March 21, 2006 in a 3-1 win over Germany . His only goal for the U-16s came in a 1-0 win over England at the Montaigu tournament . France won this after beating Italy 2-1 in the final. He played his first game for the U-17s against Cyprus in an international youth tournament. In the middle of the season Sakho was named captain by trainer François Blaquart . Under his leadership, the U-17 reached at the 2007 UEFA European Under-17 Championship in fourth place and later at the 2007 FIFA U-17 World Cup quarter-finals. In the quarter-finals of the 2007 U-17 World Cup in South Korea , they lost to Spain 4-5 on penalties.

Because of the increased number of competitive games for his club, he only played four international matches for the U-18s. He made his debut against Portugal on December 18, 2007, followed by two friendlies against Germany , one of which took place in the Gazi Stadium on the Waldau , the stadium of VfB Stuttgart II . Similar to the U-18s, it was also the U-19s : On the one hand, competitive games for the club, on the other hand, appointments to the U-21 national team prevented more than four international appearances. Despite only four appearances, he was part of the squad for the U-19 European Football Championship in 2009 . Paris Saint-Germain, however, did not give him clearance on the grounds that he wanted to spare him, as he had already participated in the Toulon tournament for the U-21s that same month .

He played his first game for the U-21 national team on August 19, 2008 in a friendly against Slovakia . At the 2009 Toulon tournament , he twice led his team as captain on the field, replacing Étienne Capoue . On September 8, 2009, he scored his first and only goal for the U-21s in the U-21 European Football Championship 2011 qualifying match against Ukraine . The game ended in a 2-2 draw. After the then captain Moussa Sissoko was appointed to the senior team, Sakho became captain. It should remain so during the 2011 European Under-21 Football Championship .

On August 5, 2010 he was nominated by the then new A coach Laurent Blanc for the friendly against Norway on August 11. Although he was not used, he was also nominated for the games in September and October. On November 17, he was allowed to make his A international debut when he came on for Philippe Mexès in the 46th minute of the friendly against England .

On November 19, 2013 Sakho was the qualifying playoff second leg World Cup 2014 hero when he in the Stade de France in his home city of Paris both the 1: 0 (22 minutes), and the decisive 3: 0 ( 71st minute) in a 3-0 win over Ukraine , which allowed France to qualify for the 2014 World Cup despite a 2-0 defeat in the first leg .

Didier Deschamps called Sakho on May 13, 2014 for the French squad for the 2014 World Cup . Sakho made his World Cup debut in the French opener against Honduras , which France won 3-0. In the second game against Switzerland , Sakho had to be replaced after 66 minutes with a score of 3-0 for France due to an injury, the game ended 5-2 for Les Bleus. However, he was able to play the full distance again in the third group game in the 0-0 win against Ecuador . In France's 2-0 win over Nigeria in the round of 16, Sakho was not used. In the quarter-finals against Germany , Sakho was substituted in the 71st minute, Germany won 1-0.

For the UEFA EURO 2016 in France Sakho was not considered.

After some outstanding performances in the Premier League , Sakho slowly returned to the field of vision of the national team. In a survey by a French newspaper about who the French would want in the French squad for the 2018 World Cup , more than half of all French people voted for Sakho for the team despite his two-year abstinence. Nevertheless Sakho was ultimately after the injury of Laurent Koscielny not taken into account in the 23er squad because as a central defender in addition to the regulars set Raphaël Varane and Samuel Umtiti also Presnel Kimpembe and Adil Rami were appointed. However, Sakho surprisingly made it onto the list of so-called Surveillants, the substitute players who would be added to the squad in the event of an injury.
