societies

Bristol City and Portsmouth FC

In 2005, 17-year-old Stephen Henderson moved from his Irish homeland to the youth academy of the English first division club Aston Villa . In the summer of 2007 he signed a one-year contract with Bristol City after his contract in Birmingham expired. On August 11, 2007 he made his debut for the second division promoted team in a 2-2 draw against league rivals Queens Park Rangers in the 2007/08 Football League Championship . In the following seasons he was loaned out to lower-class clubs in order to collect match practice. The 2010/11 season he played on loan for third division club Yeovil Town and played 33 league games.

On July 8, 2011, Henderson signed a three-year contract with Portsmouth FC . In the Football League Championship 2011/12 he started as a replacement for goalkeeper Jamie Ashdown , but was able to oust him during the season. Since Portsmouth FC was in significant financial difficulties, he moved to West Ham United on March 16, 2012 on loan . With his new team he achieved promotion to the Premier League due to a 2-1 success in the play-off final against FC Blackpool , but remained without a substitute for regular goalkeeper and national goalkeeper Robert Green until the end of the season .

West Ham United and Charlton Athletic

In May 2012, West Ham signed him on a firm contract basis and provided him with a contract valid until 2015. Since he remained behind the newly signed Jussi Jääskeläinen in the 2012/13 Premier League even after Robert Green's club change , he was loaned to the second division club Ipswich Town in October . For his new team, he played 24 games in the 2012/13 Football League Championship .

Another loan deal to AFC Bournemouth followed in October 2013 . In his second assignment for Bournemouth, he suffered a shoulder injury in the game at Nottingham Forest , which caused the loan to end prematurely and put him out of action until the end of the season.

On July 21, 2014 Stephen Henderson moved to the second division Charlton Athletic . At his new club he started as a regular goalkeeper in the Football League Championship 2014/15 , before a shoulder injury in November 2014 brought him another three-month forced break. In total, he played 31 league games by the end of the season for the table twelfth. In the following season Henderson rose with his team as third from bottom in the third-rate EFL League One .

Nottingham Forest

After relegation with Charlton Athletic, he signed a three-year contract with second division Nottingham Forest in the summer of 2016 . At the end of January 2018 awarded in Forest until the end of the season of the EFL League One 2017/18 to the third division club Portsmouth FC . At the beginning of December 2018, he was given an emergency loan to third division club Wycombe Wanderers for a week , where the two goalkeepers Ryan Allsop and Yves Ma-Kalambay were injured. After an impressive appearance on his debut, a 1-0 win against Barnsley FC , the loan was extended for another week. At Nottingham he was temporarily only fourth goalkeeper behind Costel Pantilimon , Jordan Smith and Luke Steele .

Crystal Palace

After his release in Nottingham following the 2018/19 season, Henderson joined the first division club Crystal Palace in July 2019 . There he signed a contract for the 2019/20 season.
