James Oliver Charles Tomkins (born March 29, 1989 in Basildon ) is an English football player who is under contract with Crystal Palace in the Premier League .
Career
At the age of seven, James Tomkins was discovered by West Ham United and played in their youth academy from then on. He started as a striker before he later learned his current position, central defender .
Tomkins made his Premier League debut on March 22, 2008 in the away game against Everton , which ended 1-1. Due to the respective injuries of the seasoned central defenders Danny Gabbidon , James Collins and Matthew Upson , he got further missions and was finally elected Young Hammer of the Year for the 2007/08 season.
On November 27, 2008 Tomkins moved to Derby County on loan . He made his debut for Derby in their 3-0 defeat by Burnley on November 29, 2008. On December 31, 2008, he was called back by Gianfranco Zola to West Ham. On April 4, 2009 he finally succeeded in a 2-0 win against Sunderland , after a corner from Mark Noble , his first goal in the Premier League. In the same month he was given a long-term contract.
After the departure of Collins and the constant injury to Gabbidon, Tomkins kept his place in the starting XI at the beginning of the 2009/10 season, although he lost this place in between to new signing Manuel da Costa .
In the Premier League season 2010/11 he was in the first half of the season again in most games partner of captain Matthew Upson in central defense. After a couple of poor appearances early in the season, Tomkins became more confident as the season progressed, even if he wasn't entirely clear. His increase in performance could not prevent West Ham from relegating to the bottom of the table in the second division. In the Football League Championship 2011/12 Tomkins managed direct resurgence with the Hammers .
For the 2016/2017 season , Tomkins moved to Crystal Palace within the Premier League . The transfer fee was £ 10 million.
