Liam Lawrence (born December 14, 1981 in Retford ( Nottinghamshire ), England ) is an Irish football player who is currently active at Barnsley FC .
Club career
Liam Lawrence played for his youth club Mansfield Town between 1999 and 2004 in over 100 league games in the third and fourth English leagues. For the 2004/05 season he then moved to the then second division AFC Sunderland . With the Black Cats , he managed the club's promotion back to the Premier League right after his first season . After a disappointing 20th place with only 15 points in the following season, Sunderland rose again. Lawrence was one of the better players and was voted the second best player of the year on the team behind Dean Whitehead . In the 2006/07 season, the midfielder was first loaned to Stoke City , which then committed him to the winter break of that season. Lawrence quickly took on an important role in the team and at the end of the 2007/08 season was instrumental in the first-time promotion of Stoke City to the Premier League. He was also voted Player of the Year in the squad.
On September 11, 2010 he moved to Portsmouth FC on loan . On January 1, 2011, he moved to Portsmouth on a permanent contract basis and signed for 3½ years.
Between 2012 and 2014 he played for the Greek first division club PAOK Saloniki . In the 2012/13 season he reached second place in the table with his team.
On January 16, 2014 Lawrence signed a contract until the end of the season with English second division club Barnsley .
National team
Liam Lawrence was appointed to the Irish national football team for the first time on February 16, 2006 . In the friendly against Sweden , however, he was not used. It wasn't until three years later that he made his international debut in another friendly against Nigeria . In the 1-1 draw on May 29, 2009, he played up to 81 minutes and was then replaced by Stephen Hunt .
