Dean Whitehead (born January 21, 1982 in Abingdon (Oxfordshire) , England ) is a former English football player .

Career

Whitehead played in his youth for his hometown club Abingdon Town before moving to Oxford United . With the Yellows in 1999 he made the leap to the first team and finally to the regular player. After the end of the 2000/01 season, the midfielder rose with Oxford in Division Three , the fourth English division. There it was only enough to place 21. In the following year, the club only narrowly failed to rise again. After five years and good performances, Whitehead moved to Sunderland AFC in the summer of 2004 . Aside from a training fee, Oxford was given the right to receive 25% of the transfer fee on resale. Whitehead quickly became a key player in coach Mick McCarthy's team .

At the end of the season Sunderland won the Football League Championship and rose to the Premier League . There, too, Whitehead confirmed his services and he was offered a new three-year contract. The defensive player made his debut in the top English division on August 13, 2005 against Charlton Athletic . The "Black Cats" missed relegation and were second class again for the 2007/08 season. With the start of the new season, Whitehead received the captain's armband of the AFC . So he replaced the Scottish Steven Caldwell , who left the club. Again the team secured the title of the Football League Championship. At the beginning of the following season Whitehead was injured and was out for six months, so that he could not make his comeback until November. From then on, he often had to play as a right-back due to personal problems. It wasn't until Phillip Bardsley and Pascal Chimbonda were signed that Whitehead moved back into central midfield.

In the summer of 2009, the defensive player flirted with a change. This was confirmed when it was announced that he was about to sign with Stoke City . Whitehead was awarded a four-year contract with Stoke. On August 15, 2010, the first day of play, he made his league debut for the new club in a 2-0 win against Burnley FC . Immediately he became a regular here as well and completed 36 league games in his first year at Stoke City. The Welsh coach Tony Pulis used him alternately in the defensive midfield or again as a right defender.

The midfielder has been under contract with Huddersfield Town since 2015 . There he was promoted to the Premier League in the 2016/17 season .
