Career

society

Newcastle United

Caldwell began his career in the youth department of Premier League representative Newcastle United . In the summer of 1998 he signed his first professional contract with the Magpies . He made his league debut for the club on September 30, 2000 against Manchester United . In the further course of the season he came on a total of 10 missions (including 4 as a substitute). His first and only league goal for Newcastle he also achieved in his first professional season, in the 4-3 League Cup success over his future employer Bradford City in November 2000. In the next few years, a number of loan deals followed to keep the young Scots playing practice to grant. In October 2001, an agreement was reached with the then third division club FC Blackpool on a one-month short loan. After his return to the Magpies in December of the same year, he was loaned for a month from the second division Bradford City, as they wanted to arm themselves due to acute injury problems from personnel shortages in the defensive area. In the new year the contract in Bradford was extended for another month.

After returning to Newcastle, he came on a total of 17 missions in the 2002/03 season . This even included two Champions League games against Inter Milan and Bayer 04 Leverkusen . In January 2004 he was awarded to the acutely relegation-threatened league competitor Leeds United , but where he could not prevent relegation to the second division.

Sunderland AFC

After his return to the Magpies , he was released in the summer of 2004, whereupon the then second-rate AFC Sunderland signed him . There he formed a solid defensive line with his central defender colleague Gary Breen , through which the Black Cats won the Football League Championship in the 2004/05 season and thus returned to the Premier League . In the following season he suffered a serious knee injury at the beginning of the season, which put him out of action for a long time. After he had fully recovered, however, he no longer had his regular place in the team and was used less and less over time. In addition, after a season in the top division, the direct relegation already follows.

Burnley FC

For this reason, he asked the club management in winter 2007 to be allowed to leave the club, so that the second division FC Burnley could secure his services with a three-year contract. In the team he was named captain and completed over 100 games for the club in the following three years. In the 2008/09 season he managed with the team promotion to the Premier League . Since the following season, however, the direct relegation followed and personnel savings measures were necessary, his expiring contract was extended.

Wigan Athletic

After he had kept fit in the meantime with the Bolton Wanderers and had rejected offers from Preston North End and Portsmouth FC , Wigan Athletic finally signed him in August 2010 for a year. As in the first few years in Newcastle, he played there with his brother Gary . He made his debut for his new club in the second round of the League Cup in a 3-0 win over Hartlepool United . During the season, however, Caldwell could not prevail and came only to 10 league appearances for the Latics , so his expiring contract was not extended in June 2011.

Birmingham City

Therefore, he agreed in July 2011 with the Premier League relegated Birmingham City on a one-year contract. He made his debut for the club on August 6, 2011, in a 2-1 home loss to Derby County . As the season progressed, Caldwell solidified his regular place with the Blues .

National team

Caldwell made his debut for the U-21s on March 28, 2009 against France , which was followed by another use against the Netherlands . In April 2005 he finally played his first game for the senior national team in his country, in a 1-1 friendly against Poland . In the course of his national team career, he also took part in qualifying for the 2006 World Cup in Germany.
