Adam Hughes (born July 14, 1982 in Lismore ) is an Australian football player .

Career

Hughes played from 1999 to 2001 for the offspring of the Australian club Newcastle United (until 2000 with the predecessor club Newcastle Breakers ) in the Australian National Youth League , before sporadically playing for the first team in the National Soccer League (NSL ), the top Australian league, came. In 2003, the midfielder moved to league rivals Wollongong Wolves and completed all 24 games of the 2003/04 season for the club, which was also the last season of the NSL. After the cessation of the league operations, he kept fit for some time with the Balgownie Rangers in the regional Illawarra Premier League , where he was promptly named the best player in the league.

At the beginning of the 2004/05 season he returned to the Wollongong Wolves, who continued their game operations in the New South Wales Premier League , the highest league in the state of New South Wales . Awarded the team's best player of the season, he left Wollongong after the season to continue his football career in Europe. At the English third division club Doncaster Rovers he received a short-term contract in early August 2005. Three days after his league debut against Swansea City , he scored in the first round game of the League Cup as a substitute in the 86th minute, the 1-0 winner against AFC Wrexham . Doncaster advanced to the quarter-finals after three more wins and was only defeated by Arsenal on penalties , but Hughes was no longer featured in the rest of the cup. After a total of nine competitive appearances, his contract was not renewed in January 2006 and he moved a short time later to the Irish first division club Sligo Rovers . At Sligo, Hughes was a regular player in the 2006 and 2007 seasons, for his performance in his second season in Ireland, in which he served as team captain until the refusal of a contract extension, he was from the Professional Footballers' Association of Ireland in the Eircom League of Ireland Elected Premier Division Team of the Year 2007 .

For the 2008 season he made a free transfer within the league to reigning champions Drogheda United , with whom he played, among other things, in four qualifying games of the 2008/09 UEFA Champions League , and a goal in the second round off against Dynamo Kiev (3: 4 aggregate) scored. After Drogheda ran into financial difficulties during the season, Hughes received clearance for a move at the end of the season. When neither a planned transfer to South Korea nor a change within the league came about, he returned to Australia and signed a two-year contract with A-League club Adelaide United in March 2009 .

The time at Adelaide was only moderately successful for Hughes, who sees himself as a "box-to-box" midfielder. The 2009/10 season ended in last place in the table, in the AFC Champions League 2010 they failed after winning the group in the round of 16 despite their home advantage to Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors and the 2010/11 season also ended with a 2: 3 defeat in the minor semi- final against Gold Coast United early. Hughes could not reproduce his goal danger shown in Ireland in the A-League, in 57 league and four Champions League appearances he only scored one goal.

After two years in Adelaide, Hughes joined the Western Australian club Perth Glory in April 2011 and tied himself to Adelaide's A-League competitors for two years, a few weeks earlier Adelaide's team captain Travis Dodd had already taken the same path. Hughes struggled at Perth Glory to fight for a regular place under coach Ian Ferguson , behind Jacob Burns and Liam Miller , the central midfielder only came on as a substitute in half of his 18 season appearances (two goals). Therefore, he agreed with Perth Glory a few game days before the end of the season in early March 2012 on the early termination of his contract and moved to the Chinese second division team Harbin Yiteng .
