Jacob Geoffrey Burns (born April 21, 1978 in Sydney ) is a former Australian football player who was last active for Perth Glory .
Club career
Jacob Burns began his football career with the local team Sydney United. He then moved to local rivals Parramatta Power, which he left in 2000 to join the Premier League club Leeds United . There he never got out of the role of the supplementary player and only completed eleven games in three years.
After his contract expired, he moved to Barnsley FC in 2003 . He spent three seasons at Barnsley which were far more successful than his time in Leeds. In 91 games he came there on 8 goals and one assist. He also played there occasionally as a captain.
To have a chance to play in the UEFA Champions League , he moved in 2006 to the then Polish champions Wisła Krakow . Since Burns got along very well with his coach Dan Petrescu during his time in Kraków , he followed him when he moved to the Romanian club Unirea Urziceni in 2009. There he won the championship in 2009 .
Although he was used relatively often in his first season in Romania and also showed respectable performances, he decided to return to his home country. On May 4, 2009 it was announced that Burns has negotiated a three-year contract with the A-League club Perth Glory . In Perth he was directly appointed team captain.
In the 2011/12 season he reached the Grand Final with Perth and was awarded the Joe Marston Medal as the best player of the finals despite a loss to Brisbane Roar . On November 23, 2013, he completed his 100th game for Perth Glory with the game against the Central Coast Mariners .
On April 4, 2014 Burns announced his retirement from professional football.
International career
He made his debut for the Australian national team in 2000. He did not appear regularly between 2000 and 2010, but was called up from time to time. For example, during his time at Barnsley FC, the level of his club football was insufficient for a nomination.
He played his last game for the national team in 2010, in the friendly against Indonesia .
