Michael Brie

Michael Brie (born March 24, 1954 in Schwerin ) is a German philosopher . He is the chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation . His work focuses on the theory and history of socialism and communism .

Life

Michael Brie is the son of the GDR diplomat Horst Brie and his wife Sonja and brother of André Brie . Michael Brie studied philosophy in Berlin and Leningrad and became a member of the SED in 1974 . In 1988 he became a lecturer in historical materialism at the Humboldt University in Berlin . In September 1990 he became professor of social philosophy there, despite violent protests from university staff . When he disclosed his work as an unofficial employee for the Ministry for State Security of the GDR , he was dismissed and in 1994 a termination agreement was concluded.

Brie then worked as a visiting researcher in the working group Transformation Processes in the New Federal States of the Max Planck Society at the Humboldt University and with the President of the Social Research Center in Berlin. From 1997 to 1999 he was a research associate at the Society for Social Science Research and Publishing mbH Berlin. He has been with the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation since 1999 and was head of the Political Analysis department and director of the Institute for Social Analysis of the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation from 2008 to 2013. Scientifically, he is a. a. with the socio-ecological transformation of bourgeois capitalist societies and strategic problems of the left.

From December 1989 to January 1990 Brie was a member of the party executive of the SED-PDS as well as various program commissions of the PDS / Die Linke .

Brie was a member of the board of trustees of the Solidarity Modern Institute and is a member of Attac's scientific advisory board . He has also been a member of the Leibniz Society for Science in Berlin since 2013 .
