After that, Brie acted aggressively for some time as a critic of the party content and of the party chairman Oskar Lafontaine as well as a supporter of a center-left government alliance at the federal level and received a lot of media attention. In this context, he was accused, among other things, of behaving in a lack of solidarity. Daniela Dahn , for example, criticized his attempts to participate in government .

When drawing up the federal list of the party Die Linke for the European elections on June 7, 2009, Brie failed in a runoff election for the promising 12th place against Sascha Wagener from the youth association. Among other things, his affirmation of the content of the EU constitutional treaty was criticized . He did not run for any other places.

In the state elections in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania on September 4, 2011, he received a mandate from the state list.
