Mehmet Akif Başaran (born February 15, 1956 in Izmir ) is a former Turkish football player and current coach.

Player career

Altay Izmir

The beginnings of Başaran's football career are not well documented. In 1975 he started playing professional football with the first division club in his hometown, Altay Izmir . After he had completed only one league game in his first season at Altay, he increased his league stakes in the second season to six before he prevailed as a regular player in the third season. After three very successful seasons, in which the club experienced one of its most successful, third place in the table was reached once and the final in the Turkish Cup once . During this time he played with such important Turkish players as Necmi Perekli , Yusuf Tunaoğlu , Mustafa Denizli , Erol Togay and Güvenç Kurtar . Başaran's achievements made him one of the most sought-after players of the 1979 summer transfer season.

Beşiktaş Istanbul

After the successful time at Altay, Başaran was associated with the traditional Istanbul clubs Fenerbahçe SK and Beşiktaş JK in the summer of 1979 . Fenerbahçe reacted the fastest and reached an agreement with Başaran and his teammate Bilal Yaşar . Ultimately, this change did not materialize. So Beşiktaş got involved in the negotiations and signed Başaran, together with his teammate Bora Öztürk, for a total of nine million Turkish lira . With this club, which has not won the Turkish championship for twelve years, he completed 17 league games in the first season due to injury and only won a regular place in the second season.

Bursaspor and Altay Izmir

Despite the upward trend, he left Beşiktaş again in the summer of 1981 and moved to league rivals Bursaspor . There he stayed only one season and returned to his previous club Altay Izmir for the 1982/83 season. The club rose after 24 years of membership in the first division for the first time in the club's history in the 2nd Futbol Ligi ; Başaran went to the 2nd division with his club. At the end of the season he reached the second division championship with his team and thus the direct return to the 1st league. After this success he left Altay. His further career as a player is not well documented.

National team

Başaran completed a total of four international matches for the Turkish U-21 national team between 1976 and 1977 .

Coaching career

Başaran worked from 1988 at his former club Altay Izmir as a coach. In mid-April 1988 he took over the interim position of head coach that Miloš Milutinović had left. He led the relegation-threatened club to safe relegation. Head coach of the following season was Nevzat Güzelırmak and Başaran assisted him as assistant coach. After Güzelırmak had resigned from his office in March 1989, Başaran took over the team again on an interim basis and looked after them until the end of the season. For the new season he handed over his position to the Polish coach Franciszek Smuda . This went in December 1989, Başaran took over the team again on an interim basis. After two match days he handed over the office to Erkan Kural .

In 1990 he worked for one season at the second division Petrolofisi SK . For the new season he trained with Izmirspor a second division team in his hometown. He left this club again for the next second half of the season. In November 1992 he took over another second division club from Izmir with Göztepe Izmir. He coached this club until September 1993 and then worked at Petrolofisi as a junior coach.

In the following years he coached a number of second and third division clubs. From August 2013 to April 2014, he was in charge of the fourth division Trabzon Akçaabat FK .

In September 2014 he took over a third division club Aydınspor 1923 .
