Abdullah Matay (born January 1, 1928 in Eskişehir ; † May 13, 2011 ibid) was a Turkish football player , coach, manager and official. Due to his many years of work for Eskişehirspor , he is very strongly associated with this club. Especially through his achievements as a trainer and manager, he is regarded by fans and clubs as one of the most important trainers in the club's history. As a founding member of the association and later in the activities of coaches, managers and team official, he is regarded as one of the key figures who Eskişehirspor in the 1960s and 1970s as the first Anatolian team to a serious competitor to the three major Istanbul clubs Galatasaray , Beşiktaş and Fenerbahçe made . During this time they were in the seasons 1968/69 , 1969/70 , 1971/72 three times Turkish runners-up , won once the Turkish Football Cup , once the Turkish Football Supercup and three times the Başbakanlık Kupası . There were also several finals in the important national cup competitions.

Player career

society

Matay began playing football on the street and then played in various amateur and school teams. Until the summer of 1951 he worked for the aircraft factory operating team, Eskişehir Tayyare SK , located in his hometown . Matay's first confirmed activity in professional football began in 1951 when he moved to the traditional Turkish club Fenerbahçe Istanbul . With this club he played before the first division was founded in 1959 in the then regionally held İstanbul Profesyonel Ligi (German: Istanbul professional league ), the then most renowned league in Turkey. In the 1952/53 season he reached the championship of this league with his team.

At the end of the 1952/53 season, Matay expressed the wish to leave this club for family reasons in order to switch to a capital club. Finally he came to an agreement with MKE Ankaragücü and moved to the Ankara Futbol Ligi (German: Ankara Football League ).

After three years for the capital city, Matay left Ankaragücü in the summer of 1956 and moved back to the Istanbul professional league for Beykozspor in 1908 , next to Fenerbahçe another club from the Asian side of Istanbul . From the spring of 1959 he and Beykozspor took part in the newly founded and nationwide Millî Lig , now known as Süper Lig . Up to now there was no national league in Turkey, but regional leagues existed in the larger metropolitan areas. Of these regional leagues, the most prestigious was İstanbul Profesyonel Ligi . The first season was played from February 1959 to June 1959 and ended with the championship of Fenerbahçe Istanbul . After the first two seasons of this new league had ended rather in the lower places in the table, they occupied 4th place in the table at the end of the 1960/61 season . With six goals, Matay was one of the most successful goal scorers in his club. The following season Beykozspor again occupied a lower place in the table, but Matay was with his ten league goals together with his teammate Şirzat Dağcı the most successful goalscorer of his club. In the first half of the next season Matay stayed without a game, whereupon he expressed the desire to leave the club for the winter transfer period. With the beginning of the winter transfer period, he moved to the Istanbul amateur club Taksim SK . After a year and a half, he ended his active professional football career in the summer of 1965.

After being the first coach of the newly founded football club in his hometown Eskişehir , near Eskişehirspor , to take part in the game of the then second highest Turkish league, the 2nd league , he set himself up at some league encounters and thus extended his football career for another year. At the end of the 1965/66 season they reached the championship and rose for the first time in the club's history to the highest Turkish league, the 1st Lig . Following this success, he declared the final end of his football career.

National team

1952 Matay was nominated for the first time in his career in the squad of the Turkish U21 national team as part of the Mediterranean Cup . During this tournament he played a total of three games for the Turkish U-21s.

About five years after his assignments for the U-21s, he was appointed by then national coach László Székely for a test match against the Polish national team in the squad of the Turkish national team and completed his first and only international match. Half a year after his international debut, he played in a friendly against the 2nd selection from Spain for the 2nd selection from Turkey.

Coaching career

In the summer of 1963, a nationwide tournament was held between the universities of Turkey. Eskişehir was supposed to be represented by the team from the Eskişehir Academy of Economics , then briefly referred to as Akademispor in the city . Since Matay was one of the few professional football players that his hometown Eskişehir produced, attempts were made to win him over to participate. Matay agreed and took on the dual role of player-coach . In the final, the team from Ege Üniversitesi (German: Aegean University ) was clearly defeated 6-0. After this clear success, the Burhanettin Türker , who was on the event committee, asked: "If you already have such a team, why don't you take part in the 2nd league [the second highest Turkish division, which was founded two years earlier]?" The team's manager, Nafiz Yazıcıoğlu , heard this question and passed it on to Eskişehir. When the city notables came together , Eskişehirspor was founded and Aziz Bolel was elected as the first president. For the second division season 1965/66 a participation request was made, which was confirmed a little later. With most of the players from Akademispor , the squad of Eskişehirspor was set up and Matay was appointed as the club's first coach in the dual role of player-coach. Matay was also one of the founding members of the association. A few game days after the start of the season, Matay handed over the position of head coach to the Yugoslav coach Borovic and assisted this coach as assistant coach. In addition to this activity, he was also declared the club's sports manager. In the 1965/66 season , the league was played in two stages. In the first stage, the first four teams qualified in two groups for the final round, which in turn made up the second stage. The first two teams of the final round rose directly to the 1st league . Under Borovic they qualified sovereignly for the final round, but got off to a disappointing start in the final round. Borovic was replaced as head coach by Matay for the rest of the season. With Matay as head coach, they reached the second division championship in the first season and rose to the highest Turkish division, the first league . The second division championship qualified for participation in the Başbakanlık Kupası (German: Prime Minister's Cup ). Matay's team prevailed in the final with Trabzon İdmanocağı and ensured his team's second title win.

After the Prime Minister's Cup encounter, Matay's contract as head coach was not renewed and Cihat Arman was introduced as the new coach after the contract expired . After retiring as a coach, he continued to work as a manager and ensured that the club established itself in the 1st league. After a year with Arman, Abdullah Gegiç was hired as a coach. Under this coach, the second season was rather inconspicuous and the table ended in 9th place. Matay left the club in 1968 and took over the coaching position at the second division Balıkesirspor and coached them until the summer of 1969.

In the summer of 1969 he returned to Eskişehirspor and from then on worked as an assistant coach to Gegiç and also looked after the youth department. In the meantime, Eskişehirspor had completely surprisingly reached the runner-up in the Süper Lig in the 1968/69 season. Until then, this league was only made up of teams from the three cities of Istanbul , Izmir and Ankara . Up to this season, the three big Istanbul clubs Beşiktaş Istanbul , Fenerbahçe Istanbul and Galatasaray Istanbul decided the championship of the Süper Lig and the runner-up among themselves. This success was the greatest of an Anatolian team in Turkish football to date. The teams from the cities of Izmir and Ankara have so far only reached positions 3 and 4. After this runner-up they established themselves as a fixture in Turkish football and, under the leadership of Gegiç and his assistant coach Matay, reached the runner-up again for the next two seasons. In the 1969/70 season they also reached the final of the Turkish Football Cup , but lost the final against Goztepe Izmir . The 1970/71 season they finished 4th in the league, but this time they won the Turkish Football Cup and the Turkish Supercup . After this success, Gegiç left the club after four years and was replaced by Matay as coach. With Matay Eskişehirspor started the season successfully and established themselves at the top of the table. He and his team also took part in the European Cup Winners' Cup of the 1971/72 season and prevailed clearly 4-0 in the first round against the Finnish representative MP Mikkeli . In the second round they met Dynamo Moscow, who would later take part in the final . The first game in front of a home crowd they lost 0: 1. The second leg dominated the match, but lost again with 0: 1 and was eliminated from the competition. Up to the end of the 1971/72 season they fought for the championship with Galatasaray Istanbul and again reached the runner-up at the end. After the end of the season they played against Altay Izmir for the Başbakanlık Kupası and won this cup for the second time with a 2-0 win.

For the new season Matay left Eskişehirspor and took over the league rivals Samsunspor . Towards the end of the season, he dissolved his contract with Samsunspor by mutual agreement and separated from this club. For the upcoming season he returned to Eskişehirspor and coached the club a third time. The 1973/74 season ended in 4th place in the table. At the end of the season he left Eskişehirspor and moved within the league to promoted Zonguldakspor . He looked after this club until the 22nd matchday and was then replaced by Turan Bodur .

For the new season 1975/76 he was presented for the fourth time as a coach at Eskişehirspor and looked after the club until the 9th match day. After they lost 3-0 against Göztepe Izmir on this match day , Matay separated from the club. After a few game days without employment, he took over Orduspor in early December 1975 and looked after this club until the end of the season.

After his departure from Orduspor, Matay worked again after years in the 2nd league and began to look after Antalyaspor . For the season 1978/79 season he moved within the league and took over Kocaelispor .

In September 1980, Matay returned to Eskişehirspor after five years of abstinence and was introduced here as the coach of the reserve and junior teams. A season later, Matay was reappointed head coach. But after you could only get two points in eight league games, the employment relationship with Matay was terminated. Eskişehirspor failed to avoid relegation at the end of the season, so that the club relegated to the second league after seventeen years of membership in the first division.

For the next seasons, Matay only coached teams from the third or second highest division, with only Siirt YSE being documented among the trained clubs .

The 1986/87 season he took over his hometown club Eskişehirspor, which had been promoted back to the 1st Lig in the meantime . After several unsuccessful years, Eskişehirspor experienced another successful season in the 1986/87 season under the leadership of Matay. In the league they finished 9th in the table after several years, the best placement. In addition, Matay led the team to the final of the Turkish Football Cup , but after the two finals they lost out to Gençlerbirliği Ankara . A few weeks after the cup final they played in the Başbakanlık Kupası (German: Prime Minister's Cup ) against the traditional club Beşiktaş Istanbul . The game was decided by a penalty and was able to win this trophy for the third time in the club's history. Matay looked after the team for all three of the club's Premier Minister's Cup victories, making him the coach who won this cup most often. Despite this success, there was no contract extension between Matay and the club's management at the end of the season, so that Matay left the club again.

Matay trained for the next two years then again various teams of the third or second highest division. After he had looked after the then third division side Eskişehir Şekerspor until the summer of 1989 , he was introduced as the new coach of Eskişehirspor and should lead the relegated club back into the 1st Lig. After three months in office, Matay was replaced by Gürcan Berk .

The 1991/92 season he oversaw Eskişehir Şekerspor again and then Eskişehirspor for one season again and for the last time. He then ended his coaching career.

Matay died on May 13, 2011 at the age of 83. A day later, his body was buried in his hometown after the funeral prayer held in the Sami Ramazanoğlu Mosque in Eskişehir.
