Büyükada ( Turkish for large island , Greek Πρίγκηπος Prinkipos ) is an island in the Marmara Sea off Istanbul and the largest of the Princes' Islands (Adalar) . Despite its proximity to the metropolis, the island was quiet until the beginning of the 2010s and serves as a resort for Istanbul residents.

At the highest point of the island ( 203  m , approx. 1.5 km west of the “pass”) is the old Greek Orthodox monastery church of St. George.

traffic

Büyükada can be reached by ferries from both the Asian ( Kadıköy and Bostancı) and the European (Kabataş) part of Istanbul. Private cars and taxis are prohibited on the island; one moves around with horse-drawn carriages and bicycles. Riding donkeys can be rented at the “pass” between the two hills.

Personalities

The Ottoman politician Mehmed Memduh from 1908 and the Soviet politician Leon Trotsky from 1929 each spent a few years in exile on Büyükada . Orhan Pamuk has spent every summer on Büyükada since he was a child.
