Sivriada ( Turkish for 'pointed island', Greek Ὀξειά Oxia ) is the westernmost island of the Prince Islands near Istanbul and belongs to the Adalar district .

history

Sivirada was often used as a relaxing retreat from the nearby capital by clergy of the Byzantine Empire . The island was also a prison for well-known leaders of unrest and revolutions. So Plato was exiled by Sakkoudion on the orders of Nikephoros I to a monastery on the island, because he had supported his nephew Bardanes Turkos . Other well-known, involuntary inhabitants of the island were Basileios Scleros , Nikephoritzes (influential official of Michael VII ) and the patriarchs John VII of Antioch and Michael II of Constantinople . You can visit the graves of those who died on the island.

In June 1910, the Mayor of Istanbul ordered all stray dogs in the city to be taken to the island. When the dogs were already unloaded on the island, there was an earthquake, which was seen as a divine sign. So the animals that were actually doomed were brought back to Constantinople.

Today the island is a popular excursion destination. You can see the remains of a Roman settlement, a church, a chapel for martyrs and the cistern in the middle of the island.
