Basil's Sclerus
Basileios Skleros ( Middle Greek Βασίλειος Σκλήρος ; * around 980 in Constantinople ; † after 1033) was a Byzantine patrician and rebel against Emperor Constantine VIII.
Life
Basil was a son of Magistros Romanos Skleros and grandson of the general and counter-emperor Bardas Skleros . He was married to Pulcheria Argyropulaina , a sister of the future emperor Romanos Argyros ; his daughter was the second wife of the future emperor Constantine Monomachus . In 1026 or 1027 a power struggle broke out in Asia Minor between Basil , then Strategos of Anatolicon , and his buccellar counterpart Presian , whereupon both opponents of Constantine VIII were arrested on the Prince Islands . After a failed attempt to escape from the island of Oxeia , Basil, who was said to have ambitions for the imperial throne, was blinded as a punishment . Romanos III. rehabilitated his brother-in-law and awarded him the high dignity of a master's degree. However, when Basil started a conspiracy against Romanos in 1033, he and his wife, who was an opponent of the Empress Zoe , were banished from Constantinople. His further fate is unknown.
