Presian II. (Also Presijan , Prusjan , Prusianos , Bulgarian Пресиян , Middle Greek Προυσιάνος ; * around 996/997; † after 1030) was the last ruler of the first Bulgarian empire in 1018 .

Life

Presian came from the Komitopuli family and was probably the eldest son of Tsar Ivan Wladislaw . He had five brothers ( Alusian , Aaron, Traianos, Radomir, Klimen) and six sisters. After the death of Ivan Wladislav and the subjugation of the Bulgarian Empire in February 1018 by the Byzantine Emperor Basil II , Presian and his brothers fled to Mount Tomorr , but finally had to give up their resistance. The brothers were accepted as dignitaries at the court in Constantinople , with Presian receiving the high title of Magistros .

At the time of Emperor Constantine VIII was Presian Strategos of Bukellarion . In 1026 or 1027 there was a power struggle in Asia Minor between him and Basileios Sclerus , whereupon both opponents of Constantine VIII were arrested on the Prince Islands . While Basil was blinded , Presian was released unharmed. In 1029 he was accused, along with other prominent generals, including Constantine Diogenes , with the Porphyrogenneta Theodora III. , daughter of Emperor Romanos III. to conspire against this. Allegedly he wanted to marry Theodora in order to seize the Byzantine throne. The conspiracy was uncovered, however, and Presian shaved off to become a monk and blinded. His further fate is unknown.
