Iracemápolis , officially Município de Iracemápolis , is a smaller, medium- sized town in the interior of the state of São Paulo with an estimated 23,846 inhabitants in 2018.

geography

Iracemápolis is located about 170 km northwest of the capital São Paulo and is 608 m above sea level. The community area is 115.1 km². The population density in 2010 was 174 inhabitants / km².

The area is drained by the Ribeirão Cachoeirinha , which flows into the Rio Piracicaba at the southern boundary of the district . Iracemápolis is therefore in the catchment area of the Río de la Plata .

It lies in the vegetation area of ​​the Cerrado and the Mata Atlântica . The climate is subtropical east side , according to the Köppen and Geiger Cfa climate classification .

The population was according to the census of the IBGE of 2010 20.029 inhabitants . The number was estimated by the IBGE as of July 1, 2018 at 23,846 residents.

The population was estimated to be around 5,000 when it was raised to city status in 1953/1954.

City administration

City prefect (executive) was after the local elections in 2012 for the term of office 2013 to 2016 Valmir Gonçalves de Almeida of the Partido Social Democrático (PSD), in the local elections in 2016 Fabio Francisco Zuza of the Partido da Social Democracia Brasileira (PSDB) for the term of office 2017 to 2020 as mayor.

The legislature lies with the Câmara Municipal, the city council or also known as the city council. The 11 city councilors were chaired by President Pedro Marcelo Franco de Campos from 2015 to 2016. He was replaced by President Elaine Aparecida de Oliveira Alves for the current legislative period from 2017 to 2018.

The place is also the seat of the district of the same name.

Infrastructure

Three Rodovias run through Iracemápolis: SP-151 runs in a west-east direction. The SP-306, which starts in Iracemápolis, branches off from here in a southward direction . The SP-147 runs from southwest to northeast ; it connects Piracicaba with Limeira . The nearest international airport is Viracopos Airport in southeast Campinas , about 62 km away. There is a bus station in the village.

economy

The main line of business is sugar cane cultivation , which is processed in two large sugar factories, Usina Boa Vista and Usina Iracemápolis . The systems are considered very modern. The community has a high migration and rotation of migrant workers depending on the harvest yields. Cultivation of citrus fruits and bananas is less pronounced.

For economic development, four industrial areas (distrito industrial) were set up in the east of the city, in which small and medium-sized enterprises have settled.

In March 2016, an automobile factory for Mercedes-Benz do Brasil was inaugurated. Around 20,000 vehicles, divided between the C-Class and GLA-Class models , are to be manufactured here each year.

Culture, sport, sights

The place has seven elementary and two middle schools, a city library and a city stage for all kinds of events.

The local football club Clube Atlético União Iracemapolense plays today (as of 2016) in the amateur league, its home stadium Estádio Municipal Albino Pedro Carneiro can seat 3200 spectators.

Tourism is not pronounced. Some fazendas can be visited in the surrounding area , including the Fazenda Morro Azul , which was built between 1868 and 1877 and is equipped with furniture and building materials imported from Europe, such as the azulejos , blue tiles that are otherwise only known from Bahia. The Emperor Dom Pedro II and Princess Isabella stopped there several times during the coffee barone, which is why the fazenda is also known as Casa Dom Pedro .

Iracemápolis has a radio station and the weekly newspaper Gazeta de Iracemápolis, which has been published since 2004, as well as the free Tribuna de Iracemápolis .

religion

The municipal area is taken over by the diocese of Limeira . 13,684 residents declared themselves to be Roman Catholic in 2010 with the main church Igreja da Paróquia de Jesus Crucificado, built in 1954, and the newer parish of Nossa Senhora Aparecida . A quarter of the population already belongs to the evangelical movement Assembleia de Deus , which built a church in 1962.
