Deco [ ˈdɛku ] (born  August 27, 1977 in São Bernardo do Campo , Brazil ; actually Anderson Luiz de Souza ) is a former Portuguese football player from Brazil who ended his career in 2013. He won the 2003 UEFA Cup with FC Porto and the 2004 Champions League. In 2006 he won the Champions League again with FC Barcelona . In 2010 he moved to Rio de Janeiro to Fluminense Rio de Janeiro , with whom he has since won the national championship twice. With the national team of Portugal, he became vice European champion in 2004 and fourth at the 2006 World Cup .

society

At the age of 18, Deco made his first steps in professional football at the Brazilian club SC Corinthians Alagoano in the 1995/1996 season. There he immediately became a top performer and moved to Europe for the next season to the Portuguese first division club FC Alverca .

This step did not bring him the desired success and fame, as he could not meet the expectations placed in him. Deco was then transferred to the then promoted SC Salgueiros . During this season, Deco made a name for itself throughout Portugal; so the Portuguese top club FC Porto became aware of the small, agile playmaker.

FC Porto

He moved to FC Porto in the middle of the 1998/1999 season for a record transfer fee of eight million euros. In his first season he became a star and fan favorite, winning his first Portuguese championship with the club. In the following three seasons it was quiet about FC Porto and Deco, as the team could "only" win the Portuguese Cup in 2001 and 2002 .

It was only with the new coach José Mourinho for the 2002/2003 season that he and FC Porto made progress: the championship , the cup and the UEFA cup were won. In the following season, FC Porto not only won the championship again with him, but also won the Champions League and received the awards for the best midfielder and player of the year at the UEFA Club Football Awards .

FC Barcelona

After the 2004 European Championships, he was in talks with Bayern Munich , but went to FC Barcelona . There he was - as an important player alongside Ronaldinho , Samuel Eto'o and Xavi  - on the successful team under coach Frank Rijkaard .

After championship successes with FC Barcelona (2005 and 2006), he was able to repeat the Champions League victory in 2005/2006. After this triumph, he again received the UEFA award for the best midfielder of the past CL season.

At FC Barcelona, Deco wore his favorite number, 20. In May 2008, he announced that he would not fulfill his contract until 2010 and that he would leave the club in summer 2008. This is due to a planned all-round renewal of the team and the fan-side voices against Deco that have been getting louder recently.

Chelsea FC

Deco signed a contract with Chelsea on June 30th, 2008 . Chelsea had to transfer a transfer fee of around ten million euros to FC Barcelona. At Chelsea FC, the Portuguese Paulo Ferreira , who had previously worn the number 20, agreed to take over the number 19 so that Deco's number 20 could become available for him. He played his first game on August 17, 2008 against Portsmouth , where he scored 4-0 in the 89th minute. Despite a good start with his new employer, his performance soon waned and he lost his regular position. In the 2009/2010 season he was able to improve again, but was slowed down by some injuries.

Fluminense Rio de Janeiro

On August 7, 2010 it was announced that Deco was moving to Fluminense Rio de Janeiro . In the same year he won the third national championship in the club's history with the club from Rio de Janeiro under coach Muricy Ramalho . In 2012 he won the national championship again with Fluzão , this time under coach Abel Braga . After the banned substance furosemide , which can disguise doping agents, was detected on March 30, 2013, he was banned for 30 days. On August 26, 2013, Deco finally ended his football career.

Born in Brazil, he received Portuguese citizenship in 2002 and played for the Portuguese national soccer team from 2003 to 2010 . In addition to the Portuguese passport, Deco also has the Brazilian passport. He scored his first goal in his first game for Portugal. His opponent was his native Brazil .

He took part in the 2004 European Championship in Portugal, where Greece was only defeated in the final . He was used four times at the 2006 World Cup and scored the 1-0 goal in the group game against Iran . With his team he was able to achieve fourth place. He was also part of the squad at the 2008 European Championships in Austria and Switzerland and was able to score another goal against the Czech Republic . In the quarter-finals , however, the Portuguese failed against the German team .

After losing in the round of 16 at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa , Deco ended his national team career. Due to injury, he only played a 62-minute game against Ivory Coast . That game on June 15, 2010 was his last in the shirt for the Portuguese. In total, he played 75 times for the national team and scored five goals.
