Caio César Alves dos Santos (born May 29, 1986 in Mirandópolis , São Paulo ), better known as Caio , is a Brazilian football player who is under contract with Maccabi Haifa . Caio is known in German-speaking countries because he played for many years for Bundesliga club Eintracht Frankfurt and for the Swiss record champions Grasshopper Club Zurich .

Career

Caio comes from the youth of Grêmio Barueri from the São Paulo area . From there he was sent to Campinas to Guarani FC , to Porto Alegre for SC Internacional and back to São Paulo this time to first division and traditional club SE Palmeiras awarded. In January 2008 he was sold to Eintracht Frankfurt . There he signed a contract until June 30, 2012 with no release clauses. The transfer fee was an estimated 3.5 to 4 million euros.

Eintracht Frankfurt

He made his Bundesliga debut on February 16, 2008, when he came on as a substitute for Michael Fink against Hansa Rostock in the 83rd minute of play . He scored his first Bundesliga goal in his third game: he scored against Energie Cottbus on March 20, 2008 in the 59th minute of the game. At the start of the 2008/09 season, he suffered the displeasure of the club officials when, probably because of his visible overweight, he had to stop the performance tests to determine the lactate and fitness values much too early before his teammate Faton Toski . Caio also failed the lactate test at the beginning of the winter break of the 2008/09 season. Despite the constant doubts about his physical condition, he was used more often under his last trainer Michael Skibbe . But he could not fight for a regular place. Also next to the square, Caios behavior underlined his problems settling in in Germany.

In January 2011, all parties agreed to move Caios to FK Dynamo Moscow . However, because the sports medicine examination revealed a cartilage problem in Caio's left knee, the transfer did not take place.

Return to Brazil and Grasshopper Zurich

After his contract expired, Caio left Eintracht after the 2011/12 season. A move to Figueirense FC (southern Brazil) failed again due to the sports medical examination. On August 2nd, 2012 he signed with Club EC Bahia from Salvador da Bahia .

After a short season for Atlético Goianiense , Caio signed a contract with Grasshopper Club Zurich until 2016 in the Swiss Super League in July 2013 . There he was once again trained by Michael Skibbe , as he did at Eintracht Frankfurt . In Switzerland, Caio remained largely free of injury concerns that had slowed him down in his previous career. The former Bundesliga player developed into a key player and crowd favorite at GC.

In his first season, Caio helped Zurich finish second in the Swiss football championship and qualify for the Champions League . Caio scored 13 goals and 7 assists during his first season in Switzerland.
