Grêmio Barueri Futebol Ltda. - often just called Grêmio Barueri , or Barueri - is a sports club from Barueri , a town 25 km northwest of São Paulo in the Brazilian state of the same name, which has de facto merged with the metropolis these days. The association was originally founded as Grêmio Recreativo Barueri and, for financial reasons, has since been relocated from February 2010 to May 2011 to Presidente Prudente , a city with around 200,000 inhabitants in the west of the state, almost 600 km from the capital. The association operated under the name Grêmio Prudente at that time .

history

Grêmio, the word means something like association or guild, was founded in 1989 with the strong participation of the administration of Barueri in order to give the city a sporting figurehead. Barueri had blue, red and yellow as the official club colors and operates among other things football, basketball, volleyball, gymnastics, karate, judo and athletics. The basket and volleyball departments attracted attention in the 1990s with São Paulo state championships. The footballers rose to the first division in 2008. At the end of 2009, the association decided to move to the city of Presidente Prudente due to insufficient support from the city administration , which promised greater commitment. The process was formalized in late February 2010 with a formal city council resolution. Grêmio President Marco Antonio Almeida expressed his wish that the association would be at home in Prudente for more than 100 years.

Logo Gremio Prudente

In May 2011, Grêmio was taken over by a group of companies that transferred the association back to Barueri.

The club's usual mascot in Brazil is a bee. This should symbolize values such as hard work, cooperation, down-to-earth attitude and the like. The whole concept was devised by an advertising agency.

Soccer

It was not until 2001 that Barueri professionalized the football business. The year before, the club's U20 juniors were able to attract attention when they won the state championship under the sponsored name Roma Barueri .

The fighting team had to wait until 2005 before they were promoted to the second division at the state level. It got even better the following year when, with promotion to the first national league, qualification for Série C , the third-highest division in Brazil, succeeded. With a fourth place, Barueri qualified for the Série B after the first season . There the team needed a season to establish itself. 2008 reached GRB fourth place, an increase in the highest national league, the Series A on. There, after an 8th place in 2010, the club was bottom of the table and was relegated. In 2011, the club, which at the time still operated as Grêmio Prudente, was relegated from the first state league. A year later, the club was the last to descend from Série B to Série C.

Stadion

The Barueri Arena in January 2011

Gremio originally played its home games in the Estádio Municipal Orlando Batista Noveli , which was inaugurated in 1996 and has a capacity of 5,000 spectators. The stadium was demolished in 2006 and the Arena Barueri , a multifunctional football stadium, was built in its place . The stadium was built in stages for cost reasons. Initially, an “L” -shaped basic structure was set up to allow games to be played in front of up to 17,000 spectators. The stadium was completed by 2010 and it now has a capacity of almost 32,000 spectators. In the course of further expansion, the stadium will also be completely covered.

The arena was inaugurated on May 26, 2007 with Barueri's game against Criciúma EC . The guests took the lead through Silvio, but lost in the end with 1: 2. The highest number of spectators to date was reached with 16,645 on November 26, 2008 in the game against América FC from Natal , which was decisive for the promotion of Gremio to Série A. One of the highlights of the stadium's history is the 100th goal of São Paulo FC goalkeeper Rogério Ceni , which scored in a game for the national championship against SC Corinthians Paulista in March 2011 . Grêmio shares the stadium with the lower class SC Barueri .
