Mike Barten (born November 20, 1973 in Lübeck ) is a former German soccer player and current coach . He is currently the coach of the U17 youth team of Hannover 96 .

Career

At the age of 16, Barten moved to Werder Bremen's youth department . In 1993, the defender made the leap into the club's amateur team and became vice-amateur champion. At the same time, he made his high school diploma and successfully completed an apprenticeship as a social security clerk. From 1995 he was also part of the professional squad for two years. The 1997/98 season he spent exclusively in the squad of the amateur team playing in the Regionalliga before he received a professional contract from the next season until 2003. After Thomas Schaaf's engagement , who already knew him from the amateurs, he played 16 Bundesliga games in the 1999/2000 season. A severe cartilage damage in the knee resulted in a year and a half year break, the non-renewal of the contract by the Bundesliga club and a career break. In total, Barten, who was occasionally used in midfield, played 34 Bundesliga and 6 European Cup games for the Green-Whites , in which he did not score. The sporting highlight was reaching the DFB Cup final in 2000. Barten was in action throughout the game and lost to FC Bayern Munich . He was already in the squad when he won the DFB Cup last year, but did not play during the competition.

In the winter break of the 2003/04 season, Barten moved - after negotiations with Eintracht Frankfurt about a commitment had failed - to the second division promoted FC Erzgebirge Aue , with whom he managed to stay in the league after an unfortunate sporting period for him. After the end of the season, Barten was signed by the then fourth-class SV Wilhelmshaven ; he rose with the Wilhelmshavenern in the regional league. He was used in all 34 games. A season later, the direct relegation followed.

Barten has had an A trainer license since 2006. From July 1, 2008 Barten was head coach at FC Oberneuland in the Regionalliga Nord. On November 21, 2008 he was hired by Hansa Rostock as assistant coach to Dieter Eilts . Like Eilts, he received a contract until 2010, but was given leave of absence together with Eilts on March 6, 2009 due to sporting failures. At the beginning of the 2010/11 season, Barten returned as head coach to FC Oberneuland, an earlier commitment failed due to the existing contractual relationship with Hansa Rostock. Shortly before the end of the season, Barten was dismissed due to a sustained sporting downward trend and acute risk of relegation and replaced by Uwe Reinders. Shortly before he started working as a trainer for Oberneuland, Barten accepted a position at Werder Bremen in the summer of 2009, where he was employed as a marketing employee until the end of 2012. In the summer of 2012 he was introduced as the coach of the national league club TSV Melchiorshausen . At the end of the 2013/14 season, he resigned from this post.

During his time as a marketing employee at Werder Bremen, he worked alongside his brother Tim Barten , who was around three years his junior and who has been team manager for the Werder Bremen professionals since January 1, 2013 .
