Settel is a district of Lengerich in North Rhine-Westphalia .

location

Settel is on the L 555 between Ladbergen in the southwest (3 km) and Lengerich in the northeast (3 km). In the east is the Feldmark district (1 km) and in the southeast Prigge (1 km). To the Buddenkuhlsee, located on the motorway, it is 2 km to the northwest.

history

According to the Osnabrück linguist Dr. Jellinghaus, the name Settel comes from Settelo and is made up of sette ("pasture district") and loh ("wood"). It is therefore assumed that at the time of settlement there was both a lot of pasture land and woodland. The Settel farmers became independent around 1575 after they had previously been linked to Ringel . About 330 inhabitants lived here around 1885.

In August 1907, Kaiser Wilhelm passed through the Settel farmers. The street, now known as Ladberger Straße, was restored to its best condition and planted with fruit trees on both sides.

Around 1926/28, RWE installed a power grid. Not all Settler households were connected at the same time and the measure dragged on until 1947/48.

structure

Due to the construction of the Federal Motorway 1 in the 1960s and the associated land consolidation in Lengerich-West, the Settel farmers underwent a major restructuring: watercourses were expanded extensively, which resulted in the groundwater level falling by up to 80 cm and areas became areas rounded off, so that many hedgerows had to give way. Sand was required to backfill the motorway, which was then extracted on site. This is how the Buddenkuhl Lake was created, which is now a recreational area with an adjacent campsite.
