Petar Šegrt (born May 8, 1966 in Đurđevac , SFR Yugoslavia ) is a Croatian football player and coach .

Career as a player

Šegrt grew up in Baden-Württemberg in Germany , where he began his playing career in 1984 at FV Calw. This was followed by engagements with the clubs FV Plochingen, TSV Schwaikheim, SV Allmersbach, FC Walldorf and most recently in 1993 with the amateurs of SV Waldhof Mannheim . At the age of 27 he had to end his playing career due to injury.

Career as a coach

After his career as a football player, Šegrt acquired a UEFA B coach license in November 1993. In July 1995 he completed the course for the A coaching license in Hennef and the UEFA Pro license in Cologne in October 2001.

He gained his first coaching experience at his hometown club FV Calw, in 1996 he became assistant coach at VfL Bochum, later also at MSV Duisburg and Waldhof Mannheim. In 2001 he moved to Austria , where he was the head coach of DSV Leoben . In 2003 he took over the coaching position at SV Ried ; from 2004 to 2006 he coached the Vienna Sports Club .

In 2006, the Georgian Football Association hired him to coach the Georgian U21 national team. In 2008 he briefly coached the Georgian national soccer team , after which he moved to Bali Devata FC in the Indonesia Super League . This was followed by engagements at PSM Makassar in Indonesia and at NK Zvijezda Gradačac in Bosnia , where he was dismissed in 2015.

On November 1, 2015, he signed a five-year contract as the head coach of the Afghan national team . Šegrt led the team to the runner-up at the 2015 South Asian Cup and as the first coach in the third qualifying round of the Asian Cup for the 2019 tournament . After internal disputes, he left the national team at the beginning of 2017. Šegrt has been the head coach of the Maldivian national team since March 11, 2018 . On January 7, 2020, head coach Petar Šegrt and the Maldivian Association agreed to terminate the contract by mutual agreement.
