"Do it, Otze!"

Rutemöller became known, among other things, through the saying "Mach et, Otze!", Which later became a popular phrase in various variations: On May 7, 1991, Frank Ordenewitz won the DFB Cup semi-finals between 1. FC Köln and MSV Duisburg Rutemöller in announced at half-time that they wanted to provoke a red card. Because he would have been blocked for the cup final by a yellow card (the second yellow card in the current competition) from the first half. According to the rules of the time, Ordenewitz could have served a red ban in the Bundesliga, then he would have been eligible to play for the final. In fact, a few minutes before the end of the game, Ordenewitz picked up his red card by knocking the ball away. When asked by the media about the game, Rutemöller, in contrast to Frank “Otze” Ordenewitz, openly admitted the intent of his player and his own consent with the deliberate quote. Then Ordenewitz was banned from the DFB for unsportsmanlike behavior for the cup final, Rutemöller had to pay 5000 DM fine. The DFB Cup final lost the 1. FC Cologne against Werder Bremen .
