Dorotheen Quartier (2018)

The Dorotheen Quartier is located in downtown Stuttgart between the Old Castle , the Stuttgart market hall and the Breuninger flagship store.

The Stuttgart-based company Breuninger invested over 200 million euros in the new urban district. The 60,000 m² building complex was opened in May 2017. The aboveground demolition took place between 2013 and 2014. In the summer of 2014, the construction pit was made and the foundation stone was laid one year later. The architect of the building complex is Stefan Behnisch . The name of the complex is reminiscent of the former Dorotheenplatz.

Emergence

The Stuttgart fashion and lifestyle company has been planning the redesign of the Karlsplatz district since 2007. The Stuttgart architect Stefan Behnisch created a future-oriented design that connects Sporerstrasse with the square in front of the market hall. After winning the international architectural competition in March 2010, the project was continuously developed. The planners reduced the above-ground floor area from 49,000 square meters to around 38,000 square meters and the Hotel Silber , the former Gestapo headquarters, has not been part of the project since 2012.

The demolition of the building stock, which started on October 7, 2013, was first gutted separately according to valuable and pollutants, then the entire building structure was demolished with heavy equipment. A total of 160,000 tons of demolition material were disposed of. The demolition work was completed in spring 2015.
