In October 2012, the British-American Carnival Corporation & plc ordered two cruise ships from Fincantieri . This included the Koningsdam , which was due to be delivered in autumn 2015, and the Carnival Vista , which was due to go into service in winter 2016. Construction of the Koningsdam in Marghera began on February 4, 2014 , and commissioning was postponed to February 2016. The keel was laid on August 22, 2014. The name was announced in September 2014. The Koningsdam was undocked on March 6, 2015 . A short time later, delays in the construction became known: the delivery planned for February 16, 2016 was postponed to March 31, 2016, the maiden voyage from February 20 to April 8. On May 20, 2016, the ship was christened in Rotterdam by Máxima of the Netherlands .

In the summer half of the year, the Koningsdam is stationed in Amsterdam, mainly heading for Norway (partly as far as Iceland and the North Cape) and the Baltic Sea. In the off-season it sails the Mediterranean, in the winter it sails from Fort Lauderdale (Florida) towards the Caribbean.
