The Volendam is a passenger ship operated by the American shipping company Holland-America Line . It was in Italy at the shipyard Fincantieri built and flying the flag of the Netherlands . The captain is (as of January 2010) the Nigerian-born Dutchman Peter Bos.
history
The Volendam was built at Fincantieri in Marghera . The keel was laid on February 17, 1998. On September 18, 1998, the ship was undocked and delivered on October 25, 1999. The ship was christened on November 12, 1999 by Gudmor Chris Ever and put into service on the same day.
Surname
Today's motor ship Volendam is the third ship of the Holland-America Line that bears the name of the North Holland tourist village .

Like almost all modern cruise ships, the Volendam has a diesel-electric drive. Five V12 diesel engines with a total of almost 58,000 hp drive generators to generate electricity. The shipping company specifies fuel consumption as 85 gallons per nautical mile , and the tanks hold a total of 860,000 gallons. The two propeller shafts are driven by ABB electric motors, each with an output of 17,500 hp. For maneuvering, two cross-thruster control systems are installed at the bow and stern , each of which is powered by a 2,550 hp electric motor.
