The Zaandam is a Holland America Lijn cruise ship that entered service in 2000 . She is a sister ship of the Rotterdam , the Volendam and the Amsterdam .

history

The Zaandam in dry dock

The Zaandam was commissioned as one of four sister ships of the R- class and built by Fincantieri in Trieste . In April 2000, the ship, designed for a total of over 1400 passengers, was delivered to the Holland America Lijn. In May 2000 it was christened and put into service by Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen .

The diesel-electric ship is powered by five Wärtsilä 12-cylinder diesel generators. These generate a total of 43 MW (approx. 63,000 PS); 35,000 HP of this is required for the actual drive, which is provided by two electric motors and two screws.

There is a large collection of musical instruments on board the Zaandam . In addition to a Dutch organ , several signed guitars by the Rolling Stones , Carlos Santana and Queen can be viewed . A saxophone signed by Bill Clinton is also on display in the back stairwell of the ship .

The Zaandam is used for cruises to Alaska in the summer months and to Mexico and Hawaii in the cooler months . From December to February, the ship is also used for cruises to Antarctica and South America .

Coronavirus 2020

In the course of the COVID-19 pandemic, several passengers fell ill and others had flu-like symptoms. The ship had left Buenos Aires on March 5 , and by March 28, four elderly of the 1243 passengers on board had died. 85 of the 586 crew members were quarantined in their cabins on March 28, 2020 because they had symptoms. 11 countries in South and Central America had previously banned the ship from entering their ports. Panama initially refused to pass through the Panama Canal , through which the Zaandam was to run into the Caribbean and then to Fort Lauderdale in Florida. At the end of March 2020, healthy passengers began to be transferred to the Rotterdam . People with COVID-19 symptoms, however, stayed on board the Zaandam . Both ships then called at Fort Lauderdale, where they arrived on April 2. First seriously ill people were brought off board by medical staff, then the other passengers were disembarked. Initially, 25 passengers with mild symptoms and who did not require inpatient treatment, as well as the ship's crew, remained on board.
