Horace Arthur Lowe

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Horace Arthur Lowe (born January 22, 1869 in Heaton Moor , Lancashire , † December 26, 1930 in Menton ) was an English chemist ( textile chemistry ).

Lowe was a chemist in the cotton industry in Manchester.

In 1889, Lowe discovered the advantages of mercerization (the action of caustic soda on cotton) by John Mercer (1844) for the production of gloss in cotton. He did not take advantage of it himself, as the textile industry showed no interest. He let his patent expire (British Patent No. 20314 from 1889 and No. 4452 from 1890) and the process was only introduced in Krefeld in 1895 by the Thomas & Prevost company.
