Christian Bakanic

Christian Bakanic (* 1980 in Welten , Südburgenland ) is an Austrian jazz and world music artist ( accordion , also piano , composition ).

Live and act

Bakanic received his first music lessons at the age of seven. He has lived in Graz since 1994, where he graduated from the Musikgymnasium Dreihackengasse in 1999. First he studied at the Johann Joseph Fux Conservatory , where he received the diploma for "Teacher of Folk Musical Instruments". He continued his instrumental studies at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz with Janne Rättyä, James Crabb and Geir Draugsvoll.

Bakanic played numerous concerts as a soloist and in ensembles of new folk music such as Folksmilch , Beefolk or his own trio Infernal , with whom he also released albums. He also played in Europe, Asia and Argentina with Mala Junta, Tanguango, Kahiba, Bordunikum, Scurdia and worked with musicians such as Wolfgang Muthspiel , Klaus Johns , Miguel Herz-Kestranek , Josef Pichler , Alex Deutsch , Markus Schirmer , Gwilym Simcock , Wolfgang Puschnig , Diknu Schneeberger and Jon Sass . In 2016 his album Solo Tango was released under his own name . He can also be heard on albums by Christoph Pepe Auer , Heinrich von Kalnein and Johannes Berauer .

In recent years Bakanic has also worked as a composer; he wrote compositions in the fields of jazz, folk and new music and for the theater.

Prizes and awards

Bakanic was the first prize winner in 1997 and 1999 at the national Prima la musica competition for classical accordion. He also received numerous first prizes in harmonica competitions (Styrian harmonica competition Grazer Messe, Austrian competitions “Day of the Harmonica”). Together with Klemens Bittmann and Christofer Frank, he received the German Documentary Film Music Prize in 2020 for the music of the film The Last Austrians at the Munich International Documentary Film Festival .
