The Johann Joseph Fux Conservatory of the State of Styria in Graz , named after Johann Joseph Fux , offers not only general music education, but also extraordinary courses in classical music, popular music, wind orchestra conducting, elementary music education, choir conducting, children's choir conducting and historical instrumental / vocal practice as well as in cooperation offer a proper IGP bachelor's degree in folk music with the Graz University of Art.

In 1920 the singing school, which emerged from the Musikverein für Steiermark in 1816, was allowed to hold the conservatory title for the first time. After the Styrian state government decided after the Second World War to continue the institution as the Styrian state conservatory with public funds, it was run by directors such as Franz Mixa or Erich Marckhl . In 1963 the division into the "Academy for Music and Performing Arts" and the State Music School took place. Today's University of Music and Performing Arts Graz developed from the academy, and the state music school was renamed a conservatory again in 1980 . Long-time directors of the house were Rupert Doppelbauer, Ferdinand Bogner, Anton Bärnthaler and Toni Maier . The current director is the pianist Eduard Lanner.
