Course offer

Since 1999, the VMI has offered a state-approved study and course program for the professional education of students from Germany and abroad, specializing in the field of modern jazz and popular music. It was founded as VGI - Vienna Guitar Institute by Ernst Ritsch. These training opportunities are supplemented by seminars, workshops and clinics with international greats in the music industry. The focus is on state-recognized diploma courses for singing, all instruments and composition as well as instrumental and vocal pedagogy studies, which can also be completed in combination with one another.

Since 2010, the VMI has been the first institution in Europe to offer a full course in composition pedagogy , so it also functions as a university . The course combines the creative, compositional design of music with technical-didactic and pedagogical skills and concludes with a state-recognized teaching qualification as a composition teacher. The minimum duration of study for all courses is usually eight semesters, provided that no previous studies are taken into account. A preparatory course with a maximum duration of 4 semesters serves as a targeted preparation for the ordinary or extraordinary degree.

Fields of study

General information on the fields of study

Duration of study: The duration of studies for diploma, composition and IGP studies is basically 8 semesters. Courses or years previously completed at other educational institutions with public rights can generally be counted towards studying at VMI, which can reduce the minimum duration of study accordingly.

Entry requirements: The minimum age for admission as a regular student is 15 years, the maximum age is 29 years. People who deviate from these age limits have the opportunity to take part in the course as extraordinary students. Persons from non-EU countries also have to show a valid residence permit when starting their studies.

Funding and scholarships: In accordance with the statutory provisions, VMI students are generally entitled to family allowances, study grants and scholarships.

Study exams : During the entire course, various theoretical and practical exams take place at regular intervals, which are intended to ensure that students have sufficient command of the techniques they have learned at the time.

Graduation: The studies are concluded with an examination before a committee, for which, among other things, an individual concert program must be prepared, which is presented in the context of a public concert. After successfully completing this examination, the graduates receive the relevant state-recognized diplomas and diplomas.

Registration: Online registration for the entrance exam is possible at any time. The entrance exams for the summer semester (start of studies: February) take place in November and December, those for the winter semester (start of study: September) in May and June. Dates that differ from this can be arranged on request.

Diploma course

Course of studies: In the first year of study, a practice-oriented basis is created, which is the cornerstone for the further development of the students. From the 2nd year of study, the focus is then primarily on artistic aspects for the individual development of the budding musicians, such as the development of musical systems and their practical use. The course is not limited to individual areas of musical design, but offers comprehensive training thanks to a contemporary and practice-oriented curriculum.

Prerequisites for a diploma course are several years of playing practice, previous knowledge of music theory and the passing of the entrance examination.

Instrumental and vocal pedagogy studies (IGP)

In addition to the diploma courses that have been taking place since 1999, the VMI also offers courses in instrumental and vocal pedagogy (IGP for short). The IGP program makes it possible to complete the program after a period of 8 semesters with a state-recognized teaching qualification test and represents the qualification that is necessary to later work as an instrumental or singing teacher at music schools, conservatories or similar educational institutions can.

The curriculum of the IGP course is a combination of systematic theory and practice lessons as well as supplementary pedagogy subjects, which prepares prospective singing and instrumental teachers for their later teaching activities.

Prerequisites for an IGP course are several years of playing practice, previous knowledge of music theory and passing the entrance examination.

Combined diploma & IGP studies

Due to the particularly economical structure of the hours and curriculum, the VMI offers the possibility of a combined (i.e. parallel) diploma and IGP studies. Those subjects that are provided for in both courses (e.g. harmony, rhythm training, etc.) only have to be completed once. Combined diploma and IGP courses are completed with state-recognized diplomas and teaching qualifications that enable students to teach at music schools, conservatories and similar educational institutions.

The curricula represent a combination of practical theory lessons, up-to-date practical subjects and supplementary pedagogy lectures and thus enable a broad and comprehensive course of study with optimal references (diploma and teaching certificate) to be completed.

Composition studies

As a further course offer, the VMI has been offering a diploma course in composition since September 2010. Similar to the various instrumental and vocal studies, this is a state-recognized full course that ends with a diploma examination. The focus is on the combination of systematic theory and practical lessons in connection with a modern curriculum. It is also possible to combine the composition studies with other courses (e.g. composition pedagogy, IGP or various instrumental or vocal studies).

Due to the specialization in the field of so-called jazz and popular music, the students are not only familiarized with the extensive possibilities of traditional composition and arranging techniques, but also learn above all modern composition and arranging techniques such as those used in B. for media and film music, electroacoustic music or computer music are necessary.

Prerequisites for studying composition are previous knowledge of composition and arrangement as well as passing the entrance exam.

Composition pedagogy

The study of composition pedagogy combines the creative, compositional design of music with technical-didactic and pedagogical skills and concludes with the IGP teaching qualification. It also enables a field of work at music schools, general education schools, conservatories and similar educational institutions.

The composer, pedagogue and musician Mag. Richard Graf, on whose initiative this course was set up, takes over the management of this new course: “This course is intended to convey contemporary, didactically prepared composition methods and concepts that offer creative design options and thus new musical experiences Children and young people are supported in their active, creative use of music. Up to now, composing has hardly been considered in musical and pedagogical training. Current developments in Germany, but also in Austria, indicate that the time has now come for a corresponding range of courses. The establishment of the composition pedagogy course represents a national and international pioneering project. "

The study of composition pedagogy is a full course, which is completed with a state-recognized teaching qualification. There is also the option of combining the course with other VMI courses (e.g. composition, instrumental or IGP courses).

As in the diploma course, the focus of this course is on contemporary composition and arrangement techniques, media and film music, electroacoustic music and computer music, in addition to so-called jazz and popular music.

Second degree

The VMI curriculum also offers the possibility of completing a second course in addition to the main course. In most cases, complementary main and second degree courses are combined with one another, such as singing and guitar, singing and piano, electric and double bass. In the case of a second degree, too, depending on the course chosen, the training is completed with state-recognized diplomas and / or teaching qualifications. There is also the option of completing a combined diploma and IGP degree in the second degree.

Extraordinary degree

Extraordinary students can also be admitted if there are free places. Extraordinary students are those who are under or over the minimum age of 16 years or a maximum age of 29 years. Deviations with regard to the age limit and the duration of study can be requested from the school management with the appropriate justification.

Extraordinary students have the opportunity to attend the same courses as regular students at the VMI, subject to the availability of places. In addition, Extraordinary Students are also integrated into the various courses and receive the same teaching materials as Ordinary Students. In contrast to regular studies, there is no specific length of study for extraordinary studies. A reclassification to the status of a regular student can generally be requested at the end of each semester.

Prerequisites for admission are several years of playing experience and previous knowledge of music theory as well as passing an entrance examination.
