Judith Hill (* 6. May 1984 in Los Angeles , California ) is an American pop - and R & B - singer . She became known to a wider audience when she sang the song Heal the World at Michael Jackson's official memorial service in 2009 .

biography

Hill was born the daughter of Japanese pianist Michiko and R&B bassist and producer Robert "Peewee" Hill and grew up in a musical household. She is of Japanese and African American descent.

Hill was in a relationship with Prince from fall 2014 to April 21, 2016 , but she only announced this two months after Prince's death.

Career

After graduating in music composition from Biola University in La Mirada (Southern California), Hill went to France in 2007 to work with the French chansonnier , composer and lyricist Michel Polnareff . When she returned to the United States , she began a career as a singer-songwriter . During her career she has worked for artists such as Anastacia (2002), Robbie Williams (2005), David Foster (2008) and Elton John and Leon Russell (2010).

In 2009 she was selected as one of the singers for Michael Jackson's planned comeback tour This Is It . Because Jackson passed away on June 25, 2009, the tour was canceled. She sang with the rest of the This Is It crew on July 7, 2009, along with other celebrity guests, at the King of Pop's official memorial service at the Staples Center in Los Angeles . Hill gained worldwide attention when she sang the song Heal the World alone . The funeral, which was broadcast live on television around the world, had around a billion viewers. In the same year she released the song I Will Always Be Missing You - named after her planned duet with Michael Jackson on the This-Is-It tour I Just Can't Stop Loving You - as a free download on her website. On January 26, 2010 - the same day the DVD for This Is It was released - this song was also available on iTunes . Hill donated the entire proceeds to Childhelp USA. In 2013 she appeared in the documentary 20 Feet from Stardom .

In 2015 Hill worked with Prince , among others , and is a guest singer on his album HITnRUN Phase One on the song Million $ Show . On the occasion of Prince's death on April 21, 2016, a tribute evening in honor of the musician took place on October 13, 2016 in Saint Paul (US state Minnesota) at the Xcel Energy Center , on which Hill also performed.
