Johannes Berauer

Johannes Berauer (born October 30, 1979 in Wels ) is an Austrian composer , conductor and university professor . His music tries to consciously overcome the boundaries of genres such as classical avant-garde , jazz and world music .

Live and act

Berauer completed his music studies in composition and music theory at the Anton Bruckner Private University Linz from 1999 to 2004 with Christoph Cech , Gunter Waldek and Peter Strasser . From 2004 to 2005 he studied jazz piano and composition with Ray Santisi at Berklee College of Music in Boston, before moving to the New England Conservatory there, where he was supervised by Bob Brookmeyer and Lee Hyla until 2007 .

His project The Vienna Chamber Diaries attempts a synthesis of classical chamber music and jazz; for his recording he was able to win over classical musicians as well as the jazz musicians Gwilym Simcock , Wolfgang Muthspiel , Omer Klein and Klaus Gesing . In his Hourglass project , he had his cross-border music performed by a jazz combo alone .

Berauer received compositions from the Wiener Musikverein , Konzerthaus Wien , Linzer Klangwolke and the Bruckner Orchester Linz under Dennis Russell Davies . He has performed at festivals such as the Cheltenham Music Festival, the Cully Jazz Festival , Ars Electronica and the Brucknerfest . Berauer conducted Reinhold Schmölzer's Orchestra • ra • conteur , the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and (on the occasion of his silent film project King of Ghost ) the London Philharmonic Orchestra in the Queen Elizabeth Hall .

He also arranged for Anouar Brahem on the albums Souvenance and Blue Maqams . Interpreters of Berauer's music and arrangements are also the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra , the Tallinn Chamber Orchestra, the Orquestra Gulbenkian , the Orquestra National Bordeaux Aquitaine, the Orchester National d'Île-de-France, the Tonkünstler-Orchester Niederösterreich , the Symphonieorchester Vorarlberg , the Vorarlberg Jazz Orchestra, the Vienna Chamber Orchestra , the Juniper Chamber Orchestra Perth, Camerata New York, the Eggner Trio and artists such as Benjamin Schmid , Friedrich Kleinhapl , Paul Gulda and Willi Resetarits .

Berauer taught at the Music University Graz and at the Music University Vienna . Since 2015 he has been professor of jazz composition at the Klagenfurt Conservatory .

Prizes and awards

Berauer won first prize at the Gustav Mahler Composition Competition in 2000 and the Herb Pomeroy Award in 2005 and various first prizes at the New England Conservatory in the following years. In 2010 he won the Italian competition Scrivere in Jazz and in 2013 the Austrian State Scholarship for Composition.
