Matthias Bartolomey (* 1985 in Vienna ) is an Austrian cellist who is active in both the classical and jazz genre .

Live and act

Bartolomey, who grew up in a family of musicians, received his first cello lessons at the age of six from Franz Bartolomey , his father. Then he studied in the concert class of the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna with Valentin Erben and at the Mozarteum Salzburg with Clemens Hagen , where he graduated with honors in 2010. Between 2000 and 2004 he also took courses at the Attergau International Orchestra Institute under the conductors Valery Gergiev , Mariss Jansons and Bobby McFerrin . He also completed master classes with Mstislaw Rostropowitsch , Janos Starker , Patrick Demenga , Heinrich Schiff and Günther Pichler .

During his studies, Bartolomey played in the orchestra of the Vienna State Opera and the Vienna Philharmonic , the Chamber Orchestra of Europe and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra . In 2010 Nikolaus Harnoncourt brought him to the Concentus Musicus Vienna as solo cellist . As a soloist he worked with the Vienna Chamber Orchestra and the Vienna Chamber Philharmonic , among others .

In 2012 he founded the duo BartolomeyBittmann with violinist Klemens Bittmann , which has so far released three albums and toured successfully internationally; He also composes for this duo, which is approaching jazz. With the pianist Clemens Zeilinger he formed a classic duo that recorded works by Previn , Shostakovich and Berauer for the label ARS Produktion in 2014 . Together with violinists Florian Willeitner and Johannes Dickbauer and bassist Georg Breinschmid he plays in the quartet Strings & Bass (album of the same name in 2017). He also worked on literary and musical projects with Martina Gedeck , Isabel Karajan , Birgit Minichmayr and Karl Markovics . In 2017, he recorded the saraband from Suite No. VI for cello by Johann Sebastian Bach for the music for the film Wir kettle Stella by Julian Pölsler . He is also involved in albums by Kathrin ten Hagen , Anna F. , Boy , Andreas Bourani and Pizzera & Jaus .

Bartolomey plays a cello made by David Tecchler in Rome in 1727.

Prizes and awards

In 2000, Bartolomey became the national winner at the Prima la musica competition for young talent . In 2004 he won first prize at Musica Juventutis . In 2006 he was a prizewinner at the International Johannes Brahms Competition in Pörtschach. In 2009 the Mozart Community of Vienna awarded him the Erich Schenk Prize for young musicians. At the Gradus ad Parnassum competition in 2009, he won the ESTA prize for the best interpretation of Ligeti's solo sonata.
