Klemens Bittmann

Klemens Bittmann (* 1977 in Graz ) is an Austrian violinist and mandola player .

Bittmann, who grew up in a family of music lovers, began taking classical violin lessons at the age of six. Then he studied classical violin at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz , but also jazz violin with Didier Lockwood in Paris.

His musical interests were diversified from the start. In 2000 he founded the Folksmilch quartet with fellow students in Graz , which still exists today and has so far released five albums. In 2001 he founded the Beefólk sextet with Georg Gratzer, Helgi Hrafn Jonsson, Christian Bakanic , Christian Wendt and Jörg Haberl, which bridged the gap between folk and jazz , toured with Wolfgang Muthspiel and played at major international festivals (it produced three albums and existed until the end of 2011). Bittmann also arranged the music by John McLaughlin for the Radio String Quartet . In 2009 he wrote the music for his solo album Leaving Velidhu . Since 2010 he has been working with the singer Ulfried Staber in the “Frauendienst” project on the setting of texts by the minstrel Ulrich von Liechtenstein .

In 2011, Bittmann developed the sound installation “From the Distance” for the “liquid music” festival in Judenburg and in 2012 the live loop performance “En passant”. In 2012 he founded the duo BartolomeyBittmann with cellist Matthias Bartolomey , which have so far released three albums and toured internationally. He plays in the Duo Telemannia with the woodwind player Georg Gratzer . He is also part of the Alegre Corrêa quartet . He is also involved in albums by Klaus Paier , Anna F. , Boy and Andreas Bourani .

Bittmann also teaches at the Graz Music University. He also composes and performs theater music.

Together with Christian Bakanic and Christofer Frank, he received the German Documentary Film Music Prize in 2020 for the music of the film The Last Austrians at the Munich International Documentary Film Festival .
