The radio.string.quartet , formerly also radio.string.quartet.vienna , is a string quartet from Vienna that is known, among other things, for its wide musical range and cross-genre compositions and arrangements. Based on their influences from classical , rock , jazz , folk , pop , electronic and contemporary music, the band develops its own soundscape.

history

The radio.string.quartet was with his arrangements of music of the Mahavishnu Orchestra one of the revelations of Jazz Festival Berlin in the year of 2006.

John McLaughlin wrote in the liner notes for their first album: “From the first note I was fascinated by how this group had approached my music and made it their own. You even met the atmosphere that prevailed back then. I was also deeply touched by the importance they attach to improvisation. And how they improvise! [...] This is no ordinary string quartet. The passionate devotion of the four musicians to their instruments is admirable. And that they have succeeded in merging music that is actually electric fusion jazz with elements of their classical approach while maintaining the 'electric' atmosphere is simply unique. "

The quartet has also released a DVD with this program.

Radiotree followed in 2008 , an album with accordion and bandoneon virtuoso Klaus Paier . In the same year they were guests on Ulf Wakenius ' CD Love Is Real , which is dedicated to the musical work of the Esbjörn Svensson Trio (est).

In 2009 the quartet Calling You recorded with the Swedish singer Rigmor Gustafsson , who was placed in the Swedish charts for a few weeks .

The album Radiodream (2011) marked a new chapter in the band's history with a large number of original compositions that reflect the complex musical influences of the group.

On Posting Joe - Celebrating Weather Report - live (2013), the quartet dedicated itself to the music of the Austro-American composer, pianist and keyboardist Joe Zawinul . The album was voted 2nd among the best jazz albums of 2013 by The Sunday Times (UK) .

In 2014, the band began working on the album in between silence (2017), which brought about a musical realignment of the band and a change in the way they work - both in the studio and live. For the first time, more and more voices were added to conventional string instruments and the use of electronic musical instruments also expanded the spectrum. The compositions on the album - all works by the quartet - were fundamentally revised for the live performance. In doing so, the band tried to include the different spatial conditions from listening to an album to experiencing a live concert. For the first time, the quartet worked with a co-producer, the Norwegian pianist and NuJazz pioneer Bugge Wesseltoft .

In 2020 the band started their "Quadrology", the basic idea of which is to represent the four elements earth, fire, air and water in musical language and to relate them to each other. For each element there should be collaborations and a different line-up, the center and musical link of which should be the radio.string.quartet. The first element to appear, for the first time on their own label SeeYulette , was “Erd” with the Austrian singer and composer Roland Neuwirth in June 2020 .
