Where our flag flies

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Where uns're flag flies is a march , the Johann Strauss II (op. 473) is attributed. The work was performed for the first time on May 5, 1897 in the Vienna Prater .

Remarks

The march was based on motifs from the operetta The Goddess of Reason , which premiered in 1897 . The work thus joins a series of compositions (opus numbers 471 , 472 , 474 , 475 and 476 ) that take up all the themes from this operetta. In this case, parts of number 2 of the score (the choir of the hussars, The creation masterpiece is the hussar and part of number 10 with the title Where our flag flies ) were used. This also gave the march the title name. The work was adopted by military bands immediately after its release. It was also premiered on May 5, 1897 by the chapel of the second Viennese house regiment as part of a Richard Wagner concert. It is not known whether Johann Strauss ever played this march with his orchestra or even attended a performance of it. He was alienated with everything that had to do with the operetta The Goddess of Reason , which he had only pursued to complete in order to avoid breach of contract. At that time the march only appeared as a piano edition. Whether it was actually put together by Johann Strauss or whether it is the work of another arranger, as with other pieces from the operetta Die Göttin der Vernunft , remains open.

The playing time on the CD listed under itemization is 2 minutes and 26 seconds. This time can vary somewhat depending on the conductor's musical conception.
