Goddess of Reason (Quadrille)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The goddess of reason is a quadrille which is attributed to Johann Strauss Sohn (op. 476). It was performed for the first time on January 24, 1898 in the Sofienbad Hall in Vienna.

Remarks

The work was compiled based on motifs from the operetta Die Göttin der Vernunft , which premiered in 1897 . It thus joins a series of compositions (opus numbers 471 , 472 , 473 , 474 and 475 ) that take up all the themes from this operetta. Most of these works were only completed as piano reductions. The authorship of Johann Strauss on this quadrille is not clearly proven. Since he is the operetta goddess of reasonopposed and had only completed it anyway because he was contractually obliged to do so, he also refused to produce pieces of music from motifs from this operetta. This quadrille was announced for the architects' ball in 1898 and was probably played there. Who actually put them together remains unclear. There must have been an orchestral version that was played at the premiere mentioned. However, only one piano edition has been preserved, based on which the CD recording mentioned below was arranged.

The playing time on the CD listed under individual records is 5 minutes and 17 seconds. This time can vary somewhat depending on the conductor's musical conception.
