Today is today

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Today is a waltz by Johann Strauss Sohn (op. 471). The work was performed for the first time on March 28, 1897 in the concert hall of the Wiener Musikverein .

Remarks

The waltz was composed from motifs from the last Johann Strauss operetta Die Göttin der Vernunft . The work thus joins a series of compositions (opus numbers 472 , 473 , 474 , 475 and 476 ) that take up all the themes from this operetta. Even when composing the operetta, Strauss found it difficult because he did not agree with the libretto at all. He then stayed away from the premiere of this incidentally not very successful stage work. In any case, he had only completed the operetta because he had originally signed a contract and did not want any legal disputes. The situation was similar with the normally obligatory processing of the operetta in various pieces of music. The waltz Heut ist heute , which is based among other things on No. 9a of the operetta score Schöne Wilde Jugendzeit , appeared only as a piano edition (two or four hands). Eduard Strauss probably created an orchestral version of the waltz, which he burned in 1907 along with the entire sheet music of the Strauss band. The recording on the Naxos CD mentioned below is based on a version of the piano edition orchestrated by Ludwig Babinski. Incidentally, this was dedicated to the painter Leopold Horovitz .

The playing time on the CD listed under individual records is 9 minutes and 42 seconds. Depending on the musical conception of the conductor, this time can vary by up to about a minute plus or minus.
