Ray Santisi

Raymond "Ray" Santisi (born February 1, 1933 in Boston ; † October 28, 2014 ibid) was an American jazz musician ( piano , composition ) who trained several generations of jazz pianists at Berklee College of Music .

Live and act

Santisi, who comes from an Italian migrant family, grew up in Jamaica Plain . He studied at Schillinger House between 1954 and 1956 on a scholarship . In 1954 he was a member of Boots Mussulli's quartet and Serge Chaloff's sextet and performed with Charlie Parker before working with Herb Pomeroy's orchestra .

Since 1957 Santisi taught piano and harmony at the Boston College of Music, where he later received a professorship and worked until his death. He also taught at Stan Kenton's summer courses . His students include Joe Zawinul , Jane Ira Bloom , Jan Hammer , Alan Broadbent , Arif Mardin , Gary Burton , John Hicks , Danilo Pérez , Makoto Ozone , Diana Krall and Hiromi .

Santisi continued to perform with Stan Getz , Dexter Gordon , Mel Tormé , Joe Williams , Gábor Szabó , Milt Jackson , Zoot Sims & Al Cohn , Carol Sloane , Clark Terry and Bob Brookmeyer . In the 1960s he was a member of the Benny Golson Quartet . He ran his own band, The Real Thing , and recorded with Donald Byrd , Irene Kral , Randy Weston , Buddy DeFranco and Joe Viola . With the Patricia Adams Quartet, Santisi has performed monthly at Ryle's Jazz Club since 2003 .

He was funded by the National Endowment for the Arts for his compositions . Santisi also wrote two textbooks. In 2008 he was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the International Association of Jazz Education .
