Jimmy Zitano

James "Jimmy" Zitano ( 1928 - April 1, 1989 ) was an American jazz musician ( drums , bongos).

Zitano played in the Boston jazz scene from the early 1950s; first recording was made around 1953 when Miles Davis performed at the Hi hat Club there with the Hat All Stars ( Jay Migliori , Al Walcott , Bob Freeman , Jimmy Woode ). In the following years he worked in Boston and New York City with Al Vega , Dick Wetmore , Donald Byrd , Herb Pomeroy and Serge Chaloff . In 1958 he made a guest appearance with the Lem Winchester Quartet at the Newport Jazz Festival , where he also played in a duo with Willie The Lion Smith (“Echoes of Spring”). In 1961 he left Pomeroy's band and played with Al Hirt ; ín the early 1960s he was also involved in his studio recordings with singer Ann Margaret ( The Beauty and the Beast ) and performed with Hirt's Sextet in New York's Carnegie Hall in 1965 . From 1969 he worked in a hotel band in Dallas. At a concert with the clarinetist Peyton Parks he suffered a heart attack , of which he died at the age of 61. In the field of jazz he was involved in 22 recording sessions between 1953 and 1965.
